John Lewis Moncure

Will miss him, he was a good man. Had a great family.

John was the camp commander of the Albert Sidney Johnston # 67 of the Sons of the Confederate Veterans in Houston when I joined back in 2004. He, John, established in my heart and mind what a commander of an SCV camp is. John always acted and presented himself as a southern gentleman of the first order. Our hearts break to hear about Mr. Moncure's passing. I enjoyed working with him on Insurance coverages for the Heritage Historical Corporation.

I enjoyed every single interaction I ever had with John and any conversation with him was a bright spot in that given day. I will think of John every time I hear the greeting, " How ya doing big fella", for the rest of my life. Somehow that simple phrase alone always seemed to lighten the heart and bring a smile to my face. He was a good and honorable man and we were all blessed to have known him. It saddens me to learn of John's passing. In my early years in the Sons of Confederate Veterans John was the Commander of Albert Sidney Johnston Camp 67. He also was very competent and proficient in helping Father with his final will in his final weeks. I also worked with John for several years on the Confederate Ball. I will miss his booming Southern voice.

When my sister Norma married John in December 1954 I could not have imagined what a blessing he would be to our family over the next 63 years.There are so many memories - of his dear parents, and of his expanding family.. But here I want to speak of John's professional life.
In keeping with family tradition, he chose to become a lawyer. Out of love of the law, and his love of people,, he devoted himself to his profession. He served every client with skill and grace. On September 5,2016, John celebrated 60 years as an attorney. How many thousands must remember John with great thanksgiving to have known him. Precious memories for everyone whose life he touched. My love to all those dear to him.

John was member of the Society of the Order of the Southern Cross and was helpful on several activities. We were proud to know him and will certainly miss him. Our sincere condolences to his many friends and family.

I met John 65 years ago when I joined Kappa Delta Kappa fraternity at the University of Houston, the fraternity that became beloved to both of us. In the last fifteen years we really became close friends while working the Southern Heritage Ball together. I want to do something special for John so I plan to fly my U of H flag at half mast. He will appreciate that.
Save me seat, John. I'll get there one of these days.

My love to you, Beth and Mike. While I did not know Mr. Moncure, I know that he is cherished by you both, and that he will live on in your beautiful memories. I'll think of him every time I watch Mike watching UofH play. My deepest condolences to you both, and I'll be lifting your family up in prayer. Love you.

What a great man, and even better soul. He was so helpful with the transition of our Father passing away, and then our Mother last year. I will miss his wealth of knowledge and smile. I will miss the way he answered the phone, with a "Moncure here !" He knew our Father, Joe Hollier, since they were young men, and he still held that friendship dear to his heart. He cared for all of us in the same manner. What an authentic man. Peace to the Moncure family.

My heart and prayers go out to you with the loss of a great man and friend to all, John Lewis Moncure.

To know John is to love, admire and respect him. His smile was infectious and he was so full of fun and life.

He taught many lessons to those who knew him, just be being around him and the life he led.

John lives on through his descendants and will continue to guide those who knew him by asking themselves when in a quandary, "What would John do in this situation?" He lived by example. Let us emulate his goodness. God bless.

I fear that as we lose men like John Lewis Moncure, we are losing such an important part of our Texas and Southern heritage. It is often said "Well, they don't make em like that anymore!!" Sometimes this is said without thought or true sincerity. But as to John, nothing could be truer. Perhaps in Texas, a higher compliment would be that of a Texas Ranger declaring He was good enough to ride the River with! So it was with John.

There is a eloquent letter in the LSU archives written by an earlier John Moncure. My earliest remembrance of our John Moncure is his reading of that letter. By that act, he would reveal so much about himself - his deep sense of duty to purpose, love of country and state, respect and true affection for Southern ladies, penetrating yet warmly engaging intellect, thoroughly unconditional respect and love of tradition, family and friends and, perhaps above all, his enveloping contagious joy of creating and sharing the good things of life with others. The words and spirit of his ancestor from the 18th century were so alive and well in this true gentleman who was born and grew to advanced years during the 20th century and yet lived to see and share so much of this our now 21st century.

John will be always remembered for his wisdom and the ability to make everyone he talked to and interacted with feel important and purposeful. A man wiser than I observed that "Some bless us by their comings and others by their going." Thankfully for us, John Lewis Moncure was so comfortable enjoying being in that former category.

John was a great man. I only knew him for a few years but really enjoyed our time together talking about All things Houston Cougars.
I know he will be missed by all that got to know him. He lived a long and healthy life and was blessed with so many loving family members and friends.

I can't ever remember seeing him without a smile. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Moncure Family! God be with you and yours as you grieve and celebrate his life!

Mr. Moncure was a very sweet Man and a good friend of our late Father Joe Hollier. He was there to help our Mother when Dad passed, and there again to help my Brother and I when Mom passed last April. He was smart and full of sunshine. He will be remembered here, but i'm sure he and Dad are having a good time now. 87 is good!! Prayers to the family!!!

Moncure, as many of us called him, was bigger than life and a true Southern Gentleman. John loved telling us about his ancestors. He took tremendous pleasure in the Southern Heritage Ball as its leader for many years and he loved to eat. John always welcomed me with a "how are you girl" and when my husband was sick he would ask "how's our boy". John had a heart of gold and we are really going to miss him.
