John Bruce Moore passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012, after a 14-month battle with cancer. Although his legal residence was in Dallas, he spent his last years in Gladewater in the furniture business.
He was born November 19, 1935, in Gladewater, to Sam and Harriet Moore, who preceded him in death. He earned a B.A. from Texas Christian University, a Ph.D. in philosophy and a law degree from Harvard.
During and after his teaching career at Kalamazoo College and Northwestern University, he pursued his intellectual interest in the relationship between law and philosophy. His Ph.D. dissertation was entitled "The Moral Justification of Punishment."
In 2001, one of his former students from Kalamazoo College established the "John Bruce Moore Prize in Philosophy and Law," given annually to a law student at New York University Law School.
John is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Nielsen Moore; son and wife, Douglas and Heather; grandchildren, Elijah and Alice; sister, Mary Ann Moore; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
John donated his body to medical school research.
