My favorite times with Jack were the football games-Virginia Tech at Boston College in 1994 when Jack and Malone were living in Rhode Island (with 5 yo Kate asleep under the bleacher),Ga.Tech at UVa in 1999 (and listening to the end of VT win over WVU in the car going home),and the 2000 GT at VT non-game (the infamous thunderstorm).I regret that we were not able to go to any games together after that.Jack was the smartest man I ever knew and maybe the most humble-a rare combination indeed.God bless you Papa Jack.

I will always remember you and your warm smile at Myrtle Beach. You were a great man who touched many lives and your memory will certainly live on through those you touched. Though we miss you, we know you are in a better place and one day we will be with you again. Much love.

2001 - We went to Myrtle Beach every year for about 13 years and watched these precious grandchildren, grand nieces and nephews, and friends, frolicking on the beach. He frolicked with each of them as if he were their equal. Great memories of a special man.

Jack, thank you for sharing your family and home with me these last few years. You have such a beautiful and caring family,I can see where they acquire these traits. While Ben and I have been together he has told me many wonderful stories about you and your family. With hearing these stories I can't help, but wish I had know you longer. I am grateful for having known you the short time I did. Rest in Peace, Jack.

It is always difficult to lose your Dad - no matter what your age. I remember your Dad as the "calm in the storm" at the Moss household - which I always loved visiting as a teenager. I hope you find peace in remembering the loving memories you have of such a wonderful father and husband.
Fondly,
Cheryl (Augustin) Newman

This is a poem that I wrote about my Papa Jack when I was in the first grade. He kept it on the refrigerator door in his house since the day I gave it to him. He was such a wonderful, encouraging, and kind person and I loved him so much.

I remember Mary's Dad building frames for her Mom's paintings. I remember how welcoming the family was to us when we visited during our college days. A lot of love and . much laughter. May you find comfort in all these wonderful memories shared.

The first time I visited mom and Jack in RI was the summer of 1986 - I was scheduled to stay only one week, but when the end of my week came, I didn't want to go home...Jack extended my plane ticket for me and I got to stay an extra week. He was always thinking of others!

Pops, you were so much more to me than just a grandfather. You taught me many life lessons that I will cherish in my memory forever. I can't begin to put into words how much you meant to me, but I want you know that I owe a huge part of my upbringing to you, you were like a father. Thank you for the many years of memories, I will cherish those forever! And don't worry, I will always be around to take care of Gee. I love you pops!

I remember Jack bouncing up the sidewalk to come and get my mom for a date when I was ten or eleven. He was the most pleasant man I have ever known, and a true gem of a step-father. I always felt like one of his kids, too, because he never caused me to feel any other way. He enjoyed his life and lived it selflessly. I am better for having known him, truly.

I have two vivid images of my father from when I was very young.
One was him coming through the door in the evening after work. He was wearing his winter overcoat and a hard hat and I ran and jumped on him. He picked me up and hugged me and his coat smelled of snow. He wore a pocket protector with all of his pens and slide rule in it and at the time I thought it was the coolest thing in the world.
The second was sitting in the car as he drove me to school in the morning and he was singing Oklahoma.I can still hear him. He had a beautiful voice that seemed to float. I thought he was amazing.

Papa Jack, I will always remember the way you would place your hands over your nose and move them from side to side. As kids, we were totally convinced that the "cracking" noise was your nose popping in and out of place. We told our friends at school that our grandfather knew how to pop is nose out of place. We were so proud of you. Thank you for showing your daughters and granddaughters what a genuine, kind, loving man looks like. We now know what to look for in our own partners. I love you, Papa Jack. And I will miss you forever.

We were all a large family that enjoyed each other.

I know the feeling of having the father who taught you what life was worth living for go on to the next adventure. Something is missing on the earth, but the answers have already been given on how he would like you to continue your journey. Go forward with the love in your heart and the lessons learned from an earthly father who will lead you to a heavenly one. My thoughts our with you as you sort through the loss. You are blessed to have had a good father. It has made you the special woman you are...Mary Moss Donnelly. Much love in your heart...hold the memories in there too.

I am sadden to hear of the passing of Jack. He was a co-worker of my father at DuPont. Jack and I sang tenor in the Choral Society and the chancel choir at Main Street UMC in Waynesboro. He read music better than I could so I stood beside him so I would be sure to stay on the right notes. Jack was blessed with many talents. My heartfealt sympathy to all the family and may God Bless.

Love you, Papa Jack. I have a fond memory of playing with you in the water at Myrtle Beach. I remember you squirting water at me and convincing me you had a little fish in your hands. Isn't strange the memories that stick with us? I must have only been 6 or 7, but I utterly adored you. You will be sorely missed, but your gentle kindness will never be forgotten. Rest in peace.

I remember one time when I was little I asked you which you liked better - bricks or wood. A strange question, but you thought about it and answered wood - because you could whittle it into something. You were a creative inspiration to us all and are in our hearts every day.

What a wonderful family. You are fortunate to have had Jack. He was so helpful when I had Ben in first grade; he went on field trips and wasn't just a bystander. He helped discipline. As evidenced in the obit he had lots of experience in this arena.
