John Myles Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2023.
John D. "Jack" Myles, affectionately known as "Cap" to his grandchildren, was a wonderful friend, husband, brother, son, father and grandfather. He passed away peacefully at his home in Vero Beach, Florida, on November 27th, 2023. He was born to the late John and Edith Myles on July 9th, 1939 in Newark, New Jersey.

Jack grew up in Pompton Plains, NJ, and had a thirst for outdoor adventure in what was then a rural area. As a child he loved to trap and hunt, and went on to study forestry at the University of Maine, after which he became a pilot in the US Air Force. Jack flew B-47 bombers out of Pease AFB for many years during the Cold War before joining American Airlines where he was one of their youngest captains.

He built an oceangoing 44' ketch in his back yard which he named Airlia. Jack sailed her for 30 years, ten of which were circumnavigating the globe with his wife, Diane. He also built family homes on islands off the coast of Maine where he enjoyed much of his golden years. He never lost his love for nature and was often found in the woods or on the water. He valued hard work and, like his father, was a craftsman who believed if something was worth doing it was worth doing right. A wonderful story teller and an engaging companion, his laughter and charisma will be missed by all.

He lived his last days as he did his life, with dignity and privacy, and sailed peacefully into the sunset with his love by his side. He is survived by his wife Diane, sons John, Mike, and Tim, siblings Jim, Roberta, and Dave, eight grandchildren, former wife Gail, and many other friends and family. Ever present even when flying and sailing the world, his strength and warmth will always be felt.

Dear Diane & Family, So sorry to hear of the passing of Jack! I remember flying with Jack and our occasional meeting at the PYC! He was a great pilot, sailor and more importantly a super person! He will be missed by anyone who knew him! Sincerely, Fred Vogel

I spent a lot of time with Jack when we were kids. we camped out in his backyard in Pompton Plains. Picked tomatoes at a local farm. He had a great sense of humor. Knowing him my whole life, I will surely miss him. I will not know who to discuss politics with any more. We both shared the same views. God bless Jack Myles
