John Nunziato Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 6, 2023.
John Nunziato, legendary athlete, coach, teacher, and family man passed away peacefully surrounded by his daughters and grandchildren on August 10th. He was predeceased by the love of his life, Eunice (Calesa) Nunziato, and his siblings, Joseph, Anthony, Carmen, Salvatore, and Lucia Dolly Pondelli with whom he now rests eternally.

John lived a storied and meaningful life that began in Somerville in September 1931. John ("Nunzi") was a high school standout in football, basketball, and baseball as the "little big man" where his small frame was never a limiting factor. One of his many clutch performances was sinking the winning free throws in the 1949 Tech Tourney in the Boston Garden to win the New England Championship.

At Boston University, John was a three-sport star and the only student athlete to earn nine varsity letters. He was a two-way performer on the football field (including quarterback), a starting guard on the basketball team, and a second baseman on the baseball team. John excelled at all sports and received many awards including the 1954 E. Ray Speare Award as Boston University's top scholar athlete, the prestigious Scarlet Key Award, and was also recognized as a Distinguished Military Student in the Army ROTC. John also received his master's degree in education from Boston University. In 1991, he was inducted into the Boston University Hall of Fame.

After college, John served in the 82nd Infantry Division in Germany where he started his coaching career by coaching teams in his three sports. After his military service, in 1957, John returned to his hometown Somerville where he taught at the middle school and then the high school. He coached the football team from 1964-1972, winning the State Championship in 1968 and receiving Boston Coach of the Year honors. John was later inducted into the Somerville Hall of Fame. In 1997, Somerville dedicated "Nunziato Field" on Putnam Street which serves the community for many gatherings.

John's contributions to so many people across multiple generations far exceeded his athletic accomplishments.

John and Eunice, also an educator, continued their commitment to young learners by serving as the Directors of Belmont Day Camp for many years. Their spirit, high energy, and enthusiasm provided life-long experiences to thousands of campers and counselors.

John and Eunice settled in Winchester where they raised their daughters, Lori (Davis) and Dawn (O'Connor). John affectionately became "Poppa" when grandchildren started arriving with Chris Davis, Kristin "Tissy" O'Connor Greening, Jeff Davis, and Alison O'Connor Gallagher. Poppa enjoyed a very special relationship with his grandchildren. He loved and imparted wisdom to his family including their spouses Scott Davis, Bob O'Connor, Tessa Davis, Colin Greening, Peggy Davis, and Paul Gallagher. Poppa was adored by his four great grandchildren, Bowen, Griffin, Gemma, and Graham. The family is blessed to have had John and Eunice be their ultimate role models for the importance of family and how to impact the lives of others.

At John's and the family's request, there will be a private service. Those wishing to donate on John's behalf, please consider the Ruth and Roman DeSanctis Endowed Cardiology Research Fund through the link below:

John and Eunice.....(rarely is one name mentioned without the other)... were the fresh air and sparkle to any group gathering. At Belmont Day Camp they recruited a staff who truly cared about the kids as much as they did and together sparked a summer of fun for all. Unable to say goodbye at the end of a summer, we enjoyed off-season fun as well. There were many post-Labor Day annual weekends on Nantucket, lots of visits to their home on Moose Pond in Maine, always a Super Bowl party (no matter who was playing) in Florida and of course a few rounds of golf together. Every time I hear a Sinatra tune, I will recall Johnny N with his gut bucket, crooning to Eunice and to every one in the room who is a child at heart.

I had the privilege of playing for Coach Nunziato from 68-70. Coach Nunziato was a great builder of character in young men. Coach will be missed. Bob Cowan SHS Football.

I am so sad to hear this news of his passing. I fondly remember Mr. Nunziato from my mid-70s Somerville High School years. He told us that while Happy Days had "The Fonz", we had "The Nunz"! He remains to this day one of my all-time favorite teachers. He had a very special talent of keeping us engaged, while learning things I remember to this day,, while making his classes fun and enjoyable. What a kind and wonderful gentleman. You´ll be missed, Mr. Nunz!

I had the pleasure of living next door to John and Eunice in Woburn for many years. They were like surrogate parents to me, always asking whether I had a good day or stopping to chat about whether I had eaten dinner. He was humble about his accomplishments and a lovely, kind man. I think of him often and smile.

I´m so sorry to learn of of you Dad´s passing. I worked with both your parents at BDS and BDC back in the late 70´s, and unfortunately lost touch. Two of the finest.

One of my great memories of John goes back to our Western Junior High School days. A group of us wanna be basketball players gathered every Saturday morning to play in the WJHS outdoor court. One morning John showed up. We were 7th and 8th graders. John was the shortest guy out there. When picking teams we believed height was most important. So, John got picked last. When the game started he showed them who he was. John was all over the court, stealing the ball, breaking up plays, hitting outside shots, flying in for layups. The guys were out played and left standing there wondering what happened! Years later, after our school years I asked about that day. He remembered it vividly!! He said, "oh yeah, I remember that day..I guess I just felt like I had to prove myself.!" He sure did! And, he kept proving what he could do in baseball and football as well, most of his life. Johnny Nunziato, the legend!!

I worked with John @ Somerville High from 1969 to 1981. I even announced the football games @ Dilboy Stadium, I also worked @ Belmont Day Camp for 12 summers, as did my wife Emily for 1 year, My children. Brendan and Jessica also attended. John and Eunice were the best to work for. We have so many happy memories of camp.
