John was my friend many years. Like so many of us, I admired John deeply. John was always extremely kind & gracious to me. John knew how much I was dealing with personally, and he never failed in our friendship. John was a man I trusted, he always followed through on agreements. It was always a pleasure for me when I would meet with John in his tall office building in Houston. I was always welcome in John's huge office & John met with me so many times when I didn't even actually have an appointment. John was a King; he was one of my few real Heroes!
Some of my fondest memories of John are the times I would talk with him in the many meetings I was in on, during times spent sorting out my Brother's business with John & other attorneys, investigators & others involved in whatever my Brother had going on at the time. I had first met John years back through my Brother Bob L.
I miss John's 'Presence'. I miss his power and strength; I miss the simple joy of speaking with John privately in what I always respected as his genuine Confidence. He always treasured my friendship, because he knew I was on the up & up with him; John knew I'd always be truthful with him about everything. John was like a sweet, caring brother to me.
My years in Texas are long gone, yet my most precious memories of John & our respectful friendship remain always.
Today is 31 Jan 2018. Yes, I miss John more than any words can express! My name is Mary

To Darla, Michelle, and John,
It was a great Thanksgiving at Post Oak Club. The good you did lives on at the Houston Council and many, many more places.
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You have inspired many,starting with me to try and do some good this Holiday season.
At the Starbucks on Memorial Dr.,those that knew you miss you dearly. But it's comforting to know that all the good you did will outlast us all. RIP this wonderful Holiday season.
Happy and Safe Holidays from the Starbucks Gang,

"TO BE ABSENT FROM THE BODY IS TO BE PRESENT WITH THE LORD".
Words to comfort Mr. O'Quinn's loved ones.
I knew the name, the face, but never had the priviledge. It's so wonderful to know he has so many friends who acknowledge our Lord and Savior. Thank you, Mr. O'Quinn, for all your contributions to my native town, Houston.
Peace be with the family.

To Darla, Michelle, and all U of H boosters Like John O.,
Tonight ( 11-07-09 ) a bunch of us U of H boosters were watching U of H play Tulsa. It was one of the greatest college games ever with U of H winning on the last play of the game, 46-45 with a 51 yd. field goal by a kicker who had never kicked one longer than 34 yds.
More than one of us thought that John O, one of the greatest trial lovers ever, and one of the greatest U of H boosters ever ( as in John O'Quinn field at U of H ) would have been delighted and is again smiling in Heaven. I ( and others there ) would like to think that U of H won this one for John!
There will be more great U of H victories in the future and many will be at John O'Quinn field. Smile on dear friend. You are gone in a sense but will always live on in many ways. RIP!

It was 1964 when Congress passed the Civil Rights Act and for the nine months of the 1964-1965 school term as a Freshman at Bates College of Law I shared the dismisal space in the basement of the library known as Bates College of Law with fellow classmate John O'Quinn. and the other two females --Inez 38, Mary 24, me 32 divorced with 5 minor children at home-- who braved through the hostile environment of the times, "no women wanted" attitude. I remember how John seemed to stand out at the very beginning of lightin his brilllant star. By 1970. amother of four daughters and one son, I was passionately leading the Women's Movement in Houston. On behalf of the Women's Center I express gratitude for John's charitable contribution to this group.
To Darla and Michelle: May you take comfort in knowing that John's Star is now shinning bright in Heaven before our God. And, may the Holy Spirit of the Prince of Peace, His Divine Son, descend upon you and fill you with warmth and courage as you griev through your tremendous and sudden loss. God Bless.

To Darla and Michelle,
John was larger than life and will always live in my heart and thousands of others. The good he did will eternally benefit his beloved Houston. To those that love history he will always be a large part of it. In the Starbucks on Memorial Dr. and Sheperd his presence will always be felt. All men have a journey though life with a beginning, and end and an afterward. Few have ever had the journey of John O'Quinn. May his good acts last forever and may he Rest In Peace forever.

Dear Darla and Michelle,
I am so very sorry to hear about your loss of John. Darla, I have heard so many wonderful stories about John and you through my dear friend of almost 20 years, KC Coopwood. He was a very caring and giving man. Michelle, I wish I could give you a hug right now. I am so very sad for your hurt and loss. Thank you for sharing his extensive obituary and for the honesty put forth in the eloquent words that were written about John. I believe you will help many who may be struggling to get help. Darla and Michelle, may you feel God so very close to both of you, at this difficult time, that you can feel His breath upon your faces. You are both in my prayers.

I met Mr. O'Quinn in 1986 during my employment with Rotan Mosle Inc. I was 22 years old and new to Houston. He was larger than life and very demanding. I learned a lot from just watching and listening to him. I finished up my education at the University of Houston because of John OQuinn. If the university was good enough for Mr. OQuinn it was good enough for me. I have followed him through the years and Houston has lost a very generous man. I send my condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. I hope your memories sustain you through this very difficult time.

It always amazed me how John, a high powered attorney still challenged himself and could visit a country attorney and be right at home on the farm, fishing and hanging out in the milk barn.
I'll never forget how he took the time from his very busy schedule and fast paced life and came down to Palestine, Tx., to give a eulogy for my late great husband, attorney, Ernest Swift.
He was truly an incredible person and will be greatly missed.

So sorry to hear about Mr. O' Quinn. I work ed for the law firm McAninch & Associates and was asked by Mr. Mc Aninch and Mr. O'Quinn to work New Years eve to type legal documents to be completed and signed that night. Around 10:30pm I mentioned I had New Years plans with many friends and Mr. O'Quinn asked Mr. McAninch to let me go - they signed all the documents - I notarized said papers and went on my way. Thanks to Mr. O'Quinn I had a fantastic New Years. I did other papers for him and truly enjoyed the time. So Sorry for your loss.

Dean Treece, Carl and all those who cared about John and Johnny --
O'QUINN
The world has lost a treasure,
Lady Justice surely cries today;
Super Man with a super heart,
Houston's Big John has gone away....
As some people make a difference,
Others simply follow the crowd;
This one help set the standards,
He made all of Houston so proud....
His place in history is secure no doubt,
Turbulent times he handled quite well;
Being the Best can never be easy,
Being the Best can't always be swell....
John loved the law and it loved him,
Even when his heart was hard to see;
Juries were his best-est friends,
The moon was his with just a plea....
Yes, this one made a difference,
A beacon of light in a world sometimes dim;
I hope Houston takes time to remember,
Our larger-than-life John O'Quinn....
Yes, I was one of the lucky ones that worked with John and Johnny in the early 90's. I took several trips in the firm's flying suburban myself. Some people may try and place blame on driving a vehicle fast, etc., but if you were to ask John, he would tell you that Justice Shouldn't Wait for Any Man. Both John and Johnny were in crunch-time hurrying to a mediation and for those in the legal world, we all know that crunch-time is like defcon 4, the Emergency Room on a busy Saturday night, and overtime during the Superbowl all rolled into one. Sometimes, things do happen.
John was definitely one-of-a-kind. I remember sitting between him and Racehorse Haynes at one of O'Quinn's birthday parties. We used to have those upstairs at the Acapulco Bar. Those were always so much fun because we got to see John laugh, smile and act like a kid.
I remember the time that O'Quinn made us line up to get our Christmas bonus checks outside of his office. When he called my name, I went into his office and he thanked me for the previous year of service, etc. and then he handed me an envelope with my bonus. I remember telling him that I would trade him the contents of the envelope for his picture as SuperMan. After winning the money for the bull SuperMan, someone painted a picture of John as SuperMan. John usually kept the painting out-of-sight on the back of a pillar in his office. John said that I should keep my bonus, but he would see to it that I got the painting if anything should ever happen to him. That was the one topic that we always kidded about. I have a large collection of SuperMan items. I saw him at Robertson stadium years after I left his office and after we talked for thirty minutes or so, he remembered his promise to give me the SuperMan picture. He just said, that painting has your name on it.
I remember the time that we had a limitation of liability hearing in New Orleans on a major admiralty case. We worked until late at night and then John made the final call to the opposing attorney representing the shipping company. John told him that it was going to cost him 22 million to settle the case. The opposing attorney tried to get John down to 19 million or so. Without getting flustered or flinching John calmly told the guy that he was calling to settle the case -- not to negotiate the case; and then politely told the opposing attorney that he would see him in court the next day. Less than 24 hours later, they settled with John for over 32 million. Basically, the attorney's attempt to shave a few dollars off the negotiated settlement wound up costing his company a smooth 10 million dollars.
I also remember the time that I finally got my one-on-one meeting with John. I had made it through 68 hours of law school at STCL and John and I went over next door to the firm at Birraporetti's to discuss everything. John was wearing a black leather coat with the American flag on the back. He listened to my story and then agreed to help get me back into law school to finish at the University of Houston. As my luck would have it, less than a week later, he was named a Regent for the University of Houston. I remember him coming to my office and, instead of looking happy that he was now a Regent, he looked and acted sad that he could not help me get into their law school. He said that too many eyes would be on him and I totally understood. I was touched by his generosity and kindness.
There are so many ways to describe him, but John was truly unique. I'm sad that he is gone and my prayers are with Dean Treece, Carl, and all those that loved and cared for he and Johnny -- but I know that they are both finally laughing, smiling and acting like kids for eternity.

The million-dollar verdicts and the major gifts to worthy causes were impressive...but not nearly as impressive as the man you were, John. As a friend, you had no peer. Your influence on my life was immeasurable. To John and All Who Loved Him,
Your mark is indelible, your adroit touch manifest in so many things large and small. No one can dispute the very public milestones of verdicts rendered and fortunes gifted. Impressive as your lifetime stats are, far more impressive was the man you became... wisecracking and witty, profound and sometimes profane, ever the champion and forever the friend.
I would never have dreamed of law school without your example of the practice of law as a crusade for justice. I would never have survived some of the darkest hours of my life without your constant encouragement. You lived your life as a textbook example of loyalty--and your friendship was a gift beyond compare.
My heart breaks at the loss...

For Darla,
June and I were in Bangkok when we learned of John's most untimely death. We were deeply shocked and saddened. John was a dear and loyal friend, to us and, of course, to the University of Houston. He was on the Board of Regents when I was appointed Chancellor and President in 1996. I remember him then as supportive but demanding of progress toward excellence on my part. We traveled together to two or three NCAA final fours, and we'll always remember the Super Bowl parties at his home and, of course, your Christmas parties. There are so many wonderful memories of John and of being with the two of you. You certainly were among the very best influences on John's very full life. He was a truly exceptional and gifted lawyer by any measure, remarkably generous to his heartfelt causes and to the downtrodden, and a wonderful friend. We will miss him so very much. If there is anything that June and I could do for you in this time of unbearable grief, you have but to call. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

So many car collectors keep their treasured classic cars in a garage to never see the light of day. John O’Quinn was an exception. He was very generous with his cars in that he would display them at the annual Classy Chassis Show, the Second Baptist Church Holiday Parade and the Houston Autorama for all to see, enjoy and sometimes ride in. Your display of generosity in the collector car hobby put on many smiles for those children with Cerebral Palsy at the Classy Chassis Show and allowed for younger generations to see and experience the development of the motorcar in America’s 20th Century. Thank you so much for your contributions to the collector car hobby. You will be greatly missed.

The passing of Mr. O'Quinn has left a tremendous void for those that were voiceless. He was a passioate advocate for those who could not advocate for themselves. Having had the privilege of working with him on his cases I know that every individual he represented could not ask for a better person to advocate for the wrongs that were committed to them. I personally feel that I have lost a great friend. He will be profoundly missed, but I know his legacy will live on! Gerri Colton

Racehorse Haynes suggested that I invite John O'Quinn to a performance of Opera in the Heights. I called John for four years to invite him to an opera, and I talked to Pam Burns each time. Finally, on a Saturday morning, John returned my many calls and we chatted about OH. In the conversation, we learned that we were about the same age and that he loved the opera, The Barber of Seville....OH's opera that very evening. John agreed to come with Darla Lexington. I was already committed to a friend's birthday party, but I managed to arrange tickets for Darla and John and met them at the entrance of OH. I was told that they loved the performance. Later, I asked Darla and John to chair a gala for Opera in the Heights honoring Dr. Denton Cooley. They agreed and it was a beautiful, successful evening at the Warwick Hotel in the La Fontaine Room. John, Racehorse Haynes, and I stayed in touch and we met for lunch at The Houston Club about a year ago. To lunch with Racehorse Haynes and John O'Quinn, was an absolute delight....each encouraging the other to tell me stories of some of their memorable client cases. I have fond memories of John O'Quinn .... a bigger than life character who was a great story teller and who responded to my pleas to take a look at Opera in the Heights and support the organization. I am shocked at his death. My heart goes out to Darla Lexington and to Michelle Coopwood. I know he loved them and I know they loved him. My prayers are with them regarding this terrible loss. I also want Pam Burns and his office staff to know that they are also in my thoughts and prayers.

On behalf of John O'Quinn's friends in the Vietnamese/Asian Community, we are deeply saddened by the recent passing of our great mentor, teacher and beloved friend, John M. O’Quinn.
Attorneys throughout the Legal Community in the U.S. and in Houston have said: “Mr. O’Quinn devoted his entire life to protect and defend the poor and oppressed who need justice. America and especially the City of Houston have lost a Legal Giant, a Champion, a Great Master!” The poor and the oppressed in this country are in mourning: “We have lost an angel, and our angel has come home to be with Jesus!”
While his legal abilities brought him great fame, it was Mr. O'Quinn's profound Christian love and compassion for the people -- especially the poor and defenseless -- that made him a great man. His clients were his cause, their cases his life’s work. Mr. O'Quinn was a particularly loyal ally to the Vietnamese and Asian communities, working closely with our firm for more than a decade on behalf of countless clients who were able to find justice because of John’s love, dedication and effort. The Houston Chronicle on Sunday November 1, 2009, discussed John M. O'Quinn's World Famous Rare Car Collection. Yet sadly, very few people know about O'Quinn's Heavenly Collection of Christian Souls that he won for Jesus.
For over a decade, Mr. O'Quinn helped many Vietnamese/Asians, and via his victories, he used every opportunity to pray for and with his clients, and to introduce and/or reintroduce Christ personally to them. Thousand of Vietnamese/Asians accepted Jesus Christ and became Christians, and these new Christians have carried on sowing the seeds of Christian Faith after Mr. O'Quinn.
Life without John O'Quinn will not be the same, and he will be missed tremendously. To honor our beloved friend John O'Quinn, we must continue our work to defend the poor and oppressed in his memory, ever inspired by the courage, fearlessness, and Christian faith with which he lived his life and served his calling. To paraphrase the words of Mother Teresa, "God is still in love with us and keeps giving Himself to the world" [through His children like Mr. John O'Quinn. To follow in the giant footsteps that O'Quinn leaves behind,] "[m]ay we continue to be the sunshine of God's love to our people, and thus make our life something truly beautiful to God."*

I remember John so very well from his early days with the Kronzer, Abraham, Watkins & Steely Law Firm where he came after leaving Baker & Botts. He was always so very polite and respectful to me and I appreciated that very much. Everyone recognized his dedication to his profession and his great legal talent in the courtroom. I am saddened by his untimely death and for those close to him who loved him dearly and will be grieving over his loss for quite some time. It gives me much comfort to know that he found what he had been searching for so long that seemed to bring him peace. As he enters God's Heavenly Kingdom, he will renew his friendship with many members of his profession who have gone before him who have had that same dedication to their chosen way to be of service during their time on this earth. They will all welcome him.

Darla, I pray God's love gives you peace and comfort through this tragedy and in the time ahead. I had the great pleasure of knowing John. He was such a caring and charming man. He honestly cared about his clients and worked very hard for them. I have never forgotten him and all the visits we shared. John had a special way about him that made you feel so comfortable around him, even when he was in our home. He never made you feel uncomfortable knowing that he was a famous attorney and had a lot of money. He always acted like one of our family. I went to watch him in other trials because he was so awesome in the courtroom. I have always kept up with him since meeting him those years ago. I am so thankful that John knew God and we know he is happy in God's arms. I pray for peace and comfort to all family, friends, and co-workers. I know he will be terribly missed by many.

I was very saddened to hear of Mr. O'Quinn's passing. He represented a personal injury case on behalf of my cousin and best friend who were killed in 1985 in an auto/fire truck accident. I sent him a Christmas card and he personally hand wrote a note back thanking me. I thought what a gracious man to take the time to write me back. My first impression of him was that of a witty, very personable, highly intelligent man full of charisma...I liked him right away. I was so happy and relieved to learn that he knew the Lord and take much comfort in that. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. May you feel God's ever-lasting arms of love and comfort.

I wish I had a chance to meet this fine and worthy MKP brother of mine, he did his work in Feb 2009 and I did mine July 09 at LOMG, my blessings go out to his family, friends and employees. 4000+ men in Houston and 40,000+ across the world, we stand up in people’s lives, and John has obviously shown that in all of his life by the love and honor bestowed on him here. I will meet him one day and all I will have to say is AHO and he will know me by my words and actions in this new world by the lives of the men we will worked with in our new lodge in the sky.
Aho...

As with others, I count myself as one of the lucky ones to have known him. I worked for him for many years, both full-time and part-time, many times behind the scenes. I started before John O'Quinn was well, John O'Quinn and watched him and his firm grow all through the 90's.
To watch his mind work was fascinating and absolutely a gift he had.
He will never know the enormity his life ended up having on mine.
One last time, Thank-You.

John granted an interview to a now defuct Houston business magazine. I spent part of an afternoon with John at a presentation of legal assistants and a short visit in his office. Coming away from that experience it was clear he was a gentleman and human. Later his orbit came near once more at the Pebble Beach Concurs. Watching him there it was plain he was a happy man.

John was a bigger than life man whose generousity to his friends and to those causes in which he believed exceeded the norms of common decency and giving. He loved to entertain and his celebrations of life were legendary to those fortunate to have been invited to his many entertainments. Certainly he was a man driven by ambition, his own sense of righteousness, and an unyielding pursuit of justice as he saw it. He made no aplogies exceopt to God who, I am sure, has taken him into His loving fold. John was my friend and he always treated me with a respect and a caring befitting good friendship. He tried to help me in my times of need and shared some joys in my own time of celebration. I will miss him and so will Houston. My deepest sympathies are now with his beloved Darla and Michelle, his closest friends, Gerald, Jack, Dal,and those in his law firm now charged with maintaining and expanding the legacy that he created.

There are so many words to describe John, but the one that comes to my mind first is "Friend". That's what John was to me. May you rest now in the great courtroom in the sky.
Thanks for being my friend. I shall always think of you.

The greatest achievement in John's life was not his stellar legal career, his many charities or his knack for success but his personal encounter with the Lord Jesus Christ. Nothing and nobody could ever rival that!

Mrs. O'Quinn, Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your husband. I'm wondering if he could be the same John O'Quinn who was my neighbor on Henry St. near downtown Houston in the early 50s. We used to call him Boy. After he moved away we lost contact with each other.

Proverbs 24:11: Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced to die; save them as they stagger to their death.
Sounds to me like a great rescuer has entered into his reward. A voice to the voiceless, and an advocate for justice and mercy.

John O'Quinn fought for those whose lives have been touched by unbearable sorrow, and by standing with them, he shared his own strong spirit to sustain them through the worst times. He was a truly great man - one who "fought for life, who wore at their hearts the fire's centre. . . Born of the sun, they traveled a short while toward the sun and left the vivid air signed with their honor."

John was a good sport. As a member of the University of Houston Board of Regents, he came to a River Oaks Country Club luncheon I was in charge of for the UH Moores School of Music and had not made a reservation. I said "John, I am delighted you are here, but you did not make a reservation, and if you wish to stay, it will cost you." John said, "How much? "I said $5,000." and he gasped and said OK and sent me the $5,000." A lot of the UH people laughed and said I was the only one to get money out of John for an event. I said I was probably the only one to ever ask him. Most everyone who knew me knew I expected everyone to pay if it was a fundraiser. John got a kick out of it and remained my friend.
