What a smile Jack Oliver had! He was never without it. His love of learning was so infectious and he was willing to share this love with everyone. We feel very fortunate to have known Jack.

I first met your father when he came to Connecticut with my father, Julian Smith, who is also a Cornell professor. They came to CT to attend a jazz festival. Your father had a profound knowledge of it. He was humble about his knowledge but knew more than just about everyone else at the venue. So, when I learned he proved the theory of continental drift I was not surprised. My wife Kim, daughter Celeste and I are most grateful that we met him and spent a wonderful day with him listening to music. We are deeply sorry for your loss but wanted to let you know how he was able to touch our hearts in such a short time.

Thinking of all of you.

There aren't any adequate words when you lose someone you love. All I can think is how many fond memories I have of our families' times together and smile. Remember the camping trips in the Adirondacks? I can still hear your dad playing "Five foot two, eyes of blue..." on his ukelele. Your dad's clever limericks made us laugh. All the hikes we took along the Finger Lakes trails, Monkey Run, sharing a love for nature, watching Snip, Pip, and Toodles run miles extra.
The world is a better place for having had both your parents, and an emptier place with their passing.
Sending my love.

Nell & Amy, I'm so sorry for your loss. Your dad was a great and inspirational man. I have fond memories of playing at your house, of cross country skiing with your family, and trips to Cape Cod. He was always encouraging us to go outside and do something fun, and we were always glad when we did. In both small and huge ways he made a positive difference in the lives of everyone around him. He'll be missed.

Amy and Nell-

You're both in my thoughts. I have wonderful childhood memories of hours spent playing at the Oliver home, with your dad's quick smile, your mom's teachings (and Toodles' boundless energy!).

I'm not sure they make men like Jack any more. What an amazing lifetime of accomplishments.

Our condolences to Nellie and Amy on the death of their father, Jack. We have fond memories of both Jack and Gay from our time together raising families in Cayuga Heights plus traveling to Texas for an Elderhostel and many social and church activities during the past 40 years. We miss them in our lives. God Bless them both.

Jack was a neighbor of mine as well as a cousin on his mother's side. I always admired Jack for his many accomplishments as well as remembering his roots. He always remembered St. Mary School and Parish, Massillon as well as Washington High School. My condolences to his children, grandchildren and brother, Bill.
