I did not know Dr. Opie personally, but I'm appreciative and admired him for starting the Environmental History Journal, which has afforded me many years of academic and pleasurable reading in a subject that I've grown to love. RIP, John Opie

Dr. Opie will be fondly remembered as an interesting and charismatic history professor at Duquesne University. I worked with John as a teaching assistant in 1979 and strengthened my love of history to become a high school history teacher for the past 35 years. Dr. Opie's legacy as a terrific professor will never be forgotten. My wife (Mary Ramirez) is also a Duquesne grad and remembers John's friendly manner and constant kindness. We send our deepest condolences and prayers to the family.
