John Ostberg Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2023.
John "Jack" Leroy Ostberg, age 94, passed away peacefully at his home in Mt. Prospect on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. Loving husband of 68 years to Madonna Ostberg. Devoted father of Bonnie (Mike Mooney), Daniel, Brian (Joyce), Eric (Sarah), Arla (Brian Aranza), and Rene. Beloved grandfather of Shane, Rachel, Neill, Colin, Mischa, Rhianna, Skye, Ceira, Brandon, Gabi, Abbi, Ava, and Sonia. Cherished brother of June Wiese. Predeceased by his parents Irene and John "Trygve" Ostberg. Jack grew up in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, where his family struggled during the hard times of the Depression. He was drafted into the Army and served overseas in Korea from 1951-53. After his war service, he began working at Teletype in Chicago, where he met Madonna Collins, the love of his life. They married in 1954, raising their family in the Dunning neighborhood of Chicago and later Mt. Prospect. Jack attended Wright Jr. College and Northwestern University on the GI bill while working to support a growing family. He built a successful career in international sales and marketing at Teletype/AT&T until his retirement in 1990.

Jack was a devoted and thoughtful husband, father, and grandfather who woke up early every morning for decades to pick up McDonald's coffee for Madonna. He loved the outdoors, introducing his children to his love for nature through countless camping and hiking trips over the years. His home is filled with books as he shared a passion for reading with Madonna and his children. Jack treasured his grandchildren who all adored him. He provided unconditional love and support to his entire family, no matter the circumstances, with a strength that knew no bounds. He cherished his many friends and loved organizing parties and gathering people together. An avid tennis player, he played with his local tennis group well into his eighties. He was an active member of the American Legion Arlington Heights chapter and was proud to make his Honor Flight in 2015 through the Veterans Network Committee of Northern Illinois.

Jack's kind nature, quiet smile, intelligence, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation 9-10:30 am, Saturday, February 25 at Lutheran Church of Martha & Mary, 606 W. Golf Rd., Mt. Prospect, followed by memorial service 10:30-11:30 am. Interment immediately to follow at All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines.

I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the entire Ostberg family. I worked with John at Teletype and knew him as a wonderful person and a dear friend. He will be missed. I feel blessed to have had the chance to meet with him and Madonna a few years back at the Teletype Christmas party. Photo attached.

Bonnie: So sorry for your loss. Another time to remember that the things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone; but the things you do for others shall remain as your legacy. Your Dad's legacy shall live on through all those that he has touched in such a positive way. May you find peace and comfort knowing he lived a long, productive and meaningful life with so many by his side throughout the years. Many blessings to you and your family. Bill

Loved Uncle Jack and Aunt Donna, for taking me in while I was in the 3rd grade to stay with them for a while, as my parents regrouped financially. I enjoyed staying with you all and getting to know you and the kids my cousins.

I remember my Dad (Ed Tauber) telling me how he used to go bowling with Jack, and he would throw the bowling ball so hard that it would break some of the pins. lol. I was always mesmerized by that and tried to duplicate that when I would bowl. Never accomplished it however

God blessed you all with long life and health. May the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Love always.
