John Otto Obituary

Otto, Jr. PhD, John B. Dr. John B. Otto, Jr., age 89, died on Sept. 26, 2008. He was born Nov. 4, 1918 in Kingsville, Texas, the only child of Thekla Orsinger Otto and John B. Otto. Upon graduation from King High School, he entered Texas A&I University and earned a BS degree Summa cum Laude in Chemical Engineering. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN. While at UT he met Eleanor Tacquard, and they were married May 13, 1950. After their marriage he worked for the Atomic Energy Commission in Ohio. In 1954 he moved to Dallas, where he was employed by Mobil Research & Development Corporation as a Senior Research Chemist until his retirement in 1988. His name appears on numerous patents and scientific publications. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eleanor, two daughters: Janie and Dave Garrett of Coppell and their children Austin, Matt, and Natalie; Margaret and Dr. Burt Bryan of Coppell and their children Kate and Sam Duff and John Bryan. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church since 1954, where he was an elder and past president of the Allman Sunday School Class. He was a wonderful and loving husband, father, and grandfather, and will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 1:00 p.m., and a reception of family and friends will follow in the Parlor of First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to First Presbyterian Church Foundation, 408 Park Ave, Dallas75201.
