I had a distinct privilege of knowing Jack longer than many. We were back yard neighbors and threw football passes and softball many a day in the lot that separated our homes. People remember Baby Jack for his football feats and more than likely the best that has come out of Bunkie High. But Baby Jack was very good at great in many other sports. When Bunkie had a boxing team Baby Jack made it all the way to the state finals. He was very good softball pitcher and a top quality basketball guard and as stated in the obituary a golf pro for 25 years. He went to Texas and I ended up in Maryland and did not see much of him after that. I saw him at one of his class reunions and then when our class had a reunion in 1959, he stopped at the house to see mother and me. I was thrilled for him to still think of me. He obviously was my first sports hero and remained as such until Micky Mantle came along. R.I.P. my old buddy. I will always remember you.

Remembering Jack Oubre –

Sixty-three years ago in 1949, a man named Ralph Edwards came to Bunkie, Louisiana and established a football team at Bunkie High School. Prior to his arrival in Bunkie, the sports program was basketball, softball and track. With Coach Edwards' arrival a small town with a meek sport agenda became a big town with a great football team that captured the imagination of the populace and instantly became the pride of Bunkie. All of Bunkie and the small surrounding villages didn't have to put a circle around the Friday night dates that the Bunkie Panthers were playing in Panther Stadium. This was an era that produced several of the very best of Bunkie's all-time football legends. Some of the exceptionally talented players I remember from the 1950-51 team were Boo Devillier, Marion Townsend, Jerry Ryan, Don Hines, Lloyd Newton, Herbert Goudeau, Donald Bordelon, Jerry Crouch and Jack “Baby Jack” Oubre. Among these fine football players, it was Baby Jack Oubre that epitomized the Bunkie High School Panthers. He led the parade of these young boys that played football in those memorable years. One of my purest memories was rehearsing in my mind the passing and running skills of Jack Oubre. His football passing was compact, complete and in full tune with the roar of the crowd of an always sold out Panther Stadium. He was close to being the best football player, if not the very best, that Bunkie has produced. Those who saw Jack Oubre play will never forget his talents on the football field. It was a wonderful thing to see.

My sincere condolences are extended to the family of this great Bunkien.

When I started my career in Law Enforcement back in 1975, Jack was one of the businessmen in Victoria that I could turn to for help. I soon realized that Jack was not only a strong ally to Law Enforcement but he was an ally to the community. Jack never turned me away when I approached him for an item I was needing for a community fund raiser. That is a trait that has been passed down to his daughter Sonja.

Jody, Sonja, Sherry, Jacquelyn - you had a good father. My prayers are with your family.

Billy Jack, you were truly the greatest of the great in Bunkie football history! I don't think I ever missed a home game back in the day and my daddy went to all of the away games to see you play. My parents were Sally and Lolly Griffin and and my daddy kept up with Billy Jack til his death in 1985. They were good old friends. My sympathy to all of the Oubre family as you have lost a remarkable man and Bunkie has lost a legend.

Jackie, Jody, Sherry, Sonja, We enjoyed Jack so much the three weeks he was down here. He wanted to see everybody. He came to visit us. Jack was such a pleasure to be around. I am still a little bit shocked and am so sorry. He had a sense of humor that would not
quit. Prayer to all of you. Aunt Clara

My prayers and heartfelt sympathy go out to all of the family and friends of Baby Jack. I know of no other athlete in the history of BHS, that had his ability on the football field. I had the priviledge of playing with him, and though I was younger, he always encouraged me as a teamate. Haven't seen him in a while, but feel like I have lost an old friend.

April 16, 2012

To the Family, I am sorry at your loss. As one of our top Panthers, Jack will be missed by many.

To all the Obre Family. I am deeply saddened by Baby Jack's passing. I loved watching him play football for Bunkie High when I was a kid. He was the greatest ever. I still have a No. 12 Jersey his Mom gave me. Our Dads were friends from the Texas & Pacific Railroad. All of you are in our prayers. AW "Tex" and Daniele Knaps, Jr.
