John Plank Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 30, 2024.
John R. Plank, 77, of Marlborough, beloved partner, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024.

Born on September 27, 1946, in Hartford, he was the son of the late Clifford and Etta (Swift) Plank.

John lived in Glastonbury throughout much of his life. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter and was a life member of the East Glastonbury Fish and Game Club. He was also a life member of the Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department Company 4, a founding member of the 1st Team, and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Saranac Lake, NY. Nothing made John happier than spending time with family, friends, and his loyal dogs on the deck at the Marlborough Club on Upper Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks.

John is survived by his loving life partner of 29 years, Karen Hartenstein; his daughter, Tina Garvey and husband Dale; his son, Ricky Plank; his grandchildren, Kendra, Michael, Patrick, Sarah, Rachel and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a large loving extended family; Christine LaBombard and husband Scot Faile, Jennifer Ledwith, Matthew LaBombard and wife Genessa, Veronica Ellithorpe, and grandchildren Gabriella, Nathaniel, Jack, Hannah, Eli, Anna, and Adam; and many life-long friends.

Per John's wishes there will be no services. A celebration of John's life will be held on Saturday, February 10th from 12pm - 2pm at the John Tom Hill Club, 159 Marlborough Rd., Glastonbury, CT 06033. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's memory can be made to Roy B. Pettengill Ambulance Association, 7 Hebron Rd., Marlborough, CT 06447 or to the Glastonbury Volunteer Fire Department Company 4, 1247 Manchester Rd., Glastonbury, CT 06033.

The only person I have ever known that I can say "Every minute with you was a minute well spent". You showed me what a father should be like, and supported me through the bright and the dark times. You put up with all of my BS and loved me unconditionally. I am truly grateful to have shared my time with you- whether it was going on adventures, or going down memory lane. If I could choose an epitaph for you, it would be "Yeah? So what are we gonna do about it?" You were fearless and will be missed every day.

Such great memories of John throughout my life time and he will truly be missed! I will never forget the stern, serious look he would give us when he was joking around with me and my brother. He had a heart of gold and was always there for my dad and his group of friends. May he rest in peace. Sending my thoughts and prayers to his family.

It is with heart felt sorrow that we mark the passing of our good friend John. We will remember the great times spent with him in the woods and on the water. We will miss his quick wit on the club porch and his signature wave as he would drive by.
