John Popma Obituary

Mr. John A. Popma Jr. passed away to be with the Lord on Monday, June 30, 2008 after a lengthy bought with cancer. He was born on November 12, 1918. Mr. Popma served in the United States Navy during WWII, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. Prior to his retirement in 1957 he was employed as a direct salesman with two national food companies. Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Vera J. Popma; two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Suzanne Popma of Grand Rapids and John and Jo Popma of Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Irene Popma of Grand Rapids; and many grandchildren; great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mr. Popma was preceded in death by his mother, Catherine; his father, John A. Popma Sr.; and three sisters, Francis, Gertrude and Marie. A Memorial mass will be held Tuesday July 7, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Hastings. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorial contributions can be made to Barry Community Hospice. Arrangements are by the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. You may leave a message or memory to the family at (girrbachfuneralhome.net)
