John Potts Jr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 2, 2023.
John S. Potts Jr. (71) passed away on November 17, 2023, under hospice care, after a long battle with declining health.

John grew up in Elizabeth, NJ and eventually resided in Rahway, NJ. His true joy came when working on his race cars in the sanctuary of the garage. Racing at Englishtown, Atco, and MapleGrove raceways were part of his DNA. A union ironworker by trade, he followed in his father's footsteps and provided for his family doing work that was not for the faint of heart. His workboots tell the story of a life well lived.

He could be described as strong-willed, maybe stubborn. However, his enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor surpassed those attributes. Other adjectives include...generous, loyal, and brave. He was clever and knowledgeable about diverse topics. As an avid collector, he had a very sentimental side that respected the past.

John is survived by his wife, true soulmate, and love of his life Nancy (Velez) Potts, his dedicated, loving, and caring son, John Joseph Potts and the light of his life, his grandson Jack. Also by his sister Linda (Miles) Potts. He was preceded in death by his parents, John S. Potts Sr. and Theresa (Galiszewski) Potts. He will be remembered for all the heart he shared with his friends and family. He truly loved each of them- and if you knew him, you knew it. He will be missed dearly.

Our family would like to thank the ER, CCU, 5 North and Hospice team at JFK Hospital for their compassionate care during John's short stay and our deepest gratitude to our family and friends for their support and prayers.

Respecting John's wishes, there are no services planned, no viewing or graveside mourning and weeping. Instead, a Celebration of Life will take place in the future.

"You can't let one bad moment spoil a bunch of good ones."

"You win some, you lose some, you wreck some."

"Finishing races is important, but racing is more important."
