John L. "Big John" Powell

ROCKVILLE — John L. "Big John" Powell, 60, of Rockville, died at 5:35 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009, in IU Medical Center in Indianapolis. He was born on April 11, 1949, in Terre Haute, to Frances McCoskey Powell and James B. Powell. He was formerly a carpenter and also worked at Stran Steel. He was a member of Montezuma Fish and Game Club, Isaac Walton, and St. Bernice Sportsman Club. He married Betty McClain Powell on April 7, 1973, in Rockville, and she survives.Survivors include his wife; a son, John L. Powell Jr. (Mindy) of Rockville; two grandchildren, Heather Powell and James Powell, both of Terre Haute; a sister, Kathy (Bob) Foos of Hillsdale; nieces and nephews, Lori (Craig) Hedden, Jennifer (Jeff) Winland and Wendy (Lee) Hinesley, all of Clinton, David (Melanie) Foos of Hillsdale, Rob (Jessica) Foos of Geist, James J. Powell of Hillsdale, Janean Dixon of Quaker, Leatha (Chris) Denney of Garland, Texas; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Jessica Powell; a brother, James J. Powell, in 1978; and a sister, Dollie Powell Pollard, in 1981.Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Brown Funeral Home, 1072 N. Jefferson St., in Montezuma, with the services at 8 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Keith McIntyre officiating. Cremation will follow.
