John Roberts Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2025.
John Hardy Roberts passed away peacefully in Houston, TX, on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at the age of sixty-one, with his wife, Elizabeth, by his side. John, with the support of his family and friends, courageously fought a ten-year battle with kidney disease brought on by diabetes.

John was born in New Orleans, LA, on June 16, 1964. He attended St. Martin's Episcopal School in Metairie, LA, from elementary through high school. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in 1987 from Tulane University in New Orleans, LA, and his Master of Business Administration in 1991 from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.

John began his banking career in New Orleans in 1991 and moved to Houston in 1995 for greater opportunities. He made his final professional move in 2010, joining Texas Capital Bank as Executive Vice President of Commercial Banking. His successful career was unfortunately cut short in 2018 due to his illness.

John and Elizabeth both attended St. Martin's and SMU and reconnected in Houston in 1995. They were married on May 11, 1996, and were blessed with a loving 29-year partnership filled with many achievements-the greatest being their two children, Meagan and Mitchell. When his children were young, John spent much of his free time coaching their sports teams. As they got older, he shared a love and gift for singing with his daughter, Meagan, and a talent and passion for sports and the outdoors with his son, Mitchell. He was also extremely proud of their academic achievements at St. Francis, Kinkaid, and The University of Texas at Austin.

In addition to his family and career, John was very passionate about serving his community. He was especially committed to St. Francis Episcopal Church and Day School, where he served on the church's vestry from 2011 through 2013. John was elected as senior warden of the vestry in 2012 and represented the church on the board at St. Francis Episcopal Day School. John and Elizabeth have remained dedicated members of the parish since 2009.

John is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Elizabeth Hay Roberts; daughter, Meagan; son, Mitchell; father, James G. Roberts, MD; brother, J. Graham Roberts (Carla); sisters-in-law, Lisa Hay Rourke (Brian) and Margaret Hay; and cousin, Claudia Nugent Scott (Michael), who was like a sister to him. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Caroline, Gray, John, James, Eleanor, Isabelle, and Vivienne. He was preceded in death by his mother, Claudette Eccles Roberts, and his first wife, Denise Coe Roberts.

The family would like to offer their deepest thanks to Rev. Stuart Bates, the St. Francis clergy and parish community, and the friends and family who have supported them during this time.

A funeral service in honor of John will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church, located at 345 Piney Point Road, Houston, TX 77024, where he will be interred in the church's columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis Episcopal Church: https://www.sfch.org/giving.

Mr. Roberts, you will be so missed. I wish it hadn´t been so long since we last spoke, and I wish I had another chance to say this to you in-person, but for the sake of celebrating your time with us and sharing that sentiment amongst others, I want to say my sincerest thank you for always creating a safe space for me in your home and in your family, and for always supporting my love for music and theatre. I am a better person today and am able to show up as authentically I do because of having loved ones like you.

My sincere condolences to the family. John and I went to St. Martin's together and both lived in uptown New Orleans. We rode the school bus together. I remember sleeping over at John's house on numerous occasions. We played football together with other classmates like Scott Zander and Lawrence Hoffman at the church close to his house. John was a good guy. I will miss him and it breaks my heart to read of his passing. Fred Olinde.

Mr Roberts was my first ever sports coach, and taught me how to throw a baseball. More importantly though, he taught me how to be a team player.

While I can´t throw a ball very well (to no fault of Mr. Roberts of course), I´d like to think I carry Mr. Roberts´ appreciation for teamwork through to this day.

My heartfelt sympathies to the entire Roberts family. My childhood would not have been what is was without each and every one of you.

Caludette, John's mother was a life-long friend from Coral Gables.
We had happy times in high school and reunions through many years.
I am deeply sorry and and a heart full of love to his dad, Jim and Elizabeth and all his family.

John's mother, Claudette, was a life-long friend.
When they lived in Bethesda, Md. we shared times with our four toddlers and had many happy memories. Over the years we followed John's career and joys as his family grew. All of us who knew Claudette and Jim felt we knew John, too, and are saddened by his passing. Peace to Jim.
