Roney, John H. of Hermosa Beach, CA passed away on Oct. 5, 2002. Born June 12, 1932 in Los Angeles, CA he graduated from Occidental College in 1954 and married Joan Ruth Allen in December of that year. He served to the rank of 1st Lt. in the USMC from 1954-1956.
Upon completion of his military duty service, he entered UCLA Law School from which he graduated in 1959 having served as a member of Law Review 1958-1959 and earned Order of the Coif. He joined the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers where he had a very distinguished career in the practice of corporate law until his retirement in 1995 as senior partner. During his career at OM&M he served as general counsel for the Pennsylvania, Co., the central element in the reorganization of Penn Central Corporation, and filled similar assignments in the reorganization of Baldwin United Corp. and Mutual Benefit Insurance Company and Confederation Life. Additionally, he served on the board of directors of Coldwell Banker and Co. and Brentwood Savings and Loan. He was also the policy advisor to the Insurance Commissioner of California. His affiliations included: Insurance Law Committee of Business Law Section of California State Bar Association (chairman 1993-1994), Conference of Insurance Counsel, American Bar Association, California Bar Association, D.C. Bar Association, L. A. County Bar Association, San Francisco Bar Association, Council on Foreign Relations, California Club, Los Angeles Country Club, and Gainey Ranch Golf Club (Scottsdale, AZ). John is survived by his loving wife Joan of nearly 48 years; son, Harvey (Joni); daughters, Pam, Karen (Dieter), Cynthia (Doug); grandchildren, Kage, Britta, John, Max, Collin, Piper, David, Kylie and Doiff, and sister Maryly Maguire (Hugh). He was preceded in death by his parents John Harvey Roney and Mildred Puckett Roney. John was an extremely bright, caring, dedicated, devoted and generous man who will be dearly missed by his family, friends, partners, colleagues and anyone who had the wonderful opportunity to meet him during his all too short visit with us. God speed. In honor of his life, a celebration will be held at St. Cross Episcopal Church on Oct. 17, 2002 at 4:30 pm in Hermosa Beach. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name may be made to the American Heart Association or Sandpiper Endowment Fund at P.O. Box 72 Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
