I succeeded John at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in the late eighties.
He made my path to success much easier. He was a master planner and had formed many valuable professional relationships within the hospital and community. I had been Chief Operating Officer of the fundraising effort
at the smaller sister hospital in Warren, Ohio. While I was glad to make the move to the flagship in Youngstown, I regretted the loss of John Shanley, as a former colleague. Not long after I replaced him, we hooked up at a conference in downtown Pittsburgh. Laughter, serious talk, a lovely lunch -- what more could I ask for? As I drove home, I reminisced. A lot. What a pleasure it was to join hands with John in an effort to build the philanthropic base of sister institutions. It was "healing" in every sense! (Note: Family, I had no idea that John had passed.
I learned this morning, after having completed an internet search. So sorry this is late. But, so heartfelt... Through my tears...)

I am so sorry to hear, I was once part of the Shanley family, I grew up spending much of my time at the house, camping etc. Mr. Shanley was kind, funny, generous, a great father and etched in my memory forever. Some of the best times of my life were spent with the Shanley family, I hope you are all well and know that everyone knew he was a great and kind man.

Although I was never lucky enough to meet Mr. Shanley, I am sure he was an excellent father as his son Mike is a truly wonderful person. Love and light to all of you. -- Aimee DeFoe

Sincere Sympathy to Martha and Family, I was sad to hear of John's passing. I've known John since we were in first grade together at St. Rosalia. And I'm glad that our boys were friends in grade school at St. Philomena, while we lived in Pittsburgh. You have a great family and our thoughts are with you today.

Martha and family. Very saddened by the loss of John. We had worked together at the Urban redevelopment Authority in the sixties. He was a good friend and companion in those years. He will be in my prayers I remember his contagious smile. God bless you and yor family.

John was one of the first people that I met at Suburban General Hospital. He could not have been nicer. We laughed through revolving door CEO's, a Re-visit by the Joint Commission, talked about music and mediocre hospital food, and his son's pizza palace on Banksville Road. I have wonderful memories of this fantastic man. My deepest sympathies to everyone.

I haven't seen John in more than 60 years, but I remember being in an operetta with him in a DPA High School production in 1952. He was a good singer and a fun guy. May he rest in peace.
