John was a stranger to me in the early summer of 1999 when I was a grad student at Wesleyan. He showed up at my house during the middle of a rain storm after driving up from Florida. As I recall, he was hoping to find a friend of his who had lived at my house before I moved in. He seemed like a nice enough guy and because the storm was really fierce and he seemed to have no where else to go for the night, I let him stay over. But John was such an interesting and open-hearted guy that he ended up staying the whole summer. Oddly, there didn't seem to be anything strange about that - he just fit right in. So John worked tirelessly on an ebony wood mixed media design project, connected with his advisor, and engaged me conversationally on all kinds topics, personal, technical, and metaphysical. I lost touch with John shortly thereafter but I will always cherish the generosity of spirit that came so naturally to him. I am so happy that he gave his strong voice to causes that were so important to him, and so sad that he had to go too soon.

John's laugh was the best for sure. I am curating another student art show this coming March at Art & Frame in Sarasota.
My small way to show my artwork and the art that my students will create to honor John. Miss you, my friend.
