John Frederic Slater passed away June 2, 2012 in El Fuerte, Sinaloa, Mexico, while flying his airplane on a goodwill mission for Liga International (Flying Doctors of Mercy). I only met John once, at the wedding when my father and Jean married (some time after their respective spouses had died). It was clear that the Slater family, like my family, was very close and caring. I was so happy that my Dad had found another wonderful woman (and family) to be a part of his life.

I can only imagine the grief his mother and sisters feel. This is the downside to being so close, but who would have it any other way? The only consolation, if there is any, is that John died doing what he loved -- flying -- and helping those people who need help the most. Who among us could ask for more?

John Slater's family and friends are in my thoughts and in my prayers during this difficult time. He was a charismatic, handsome, fastidious man who walked with a swagger and had pep in his step. He exuded confidence. He knew how to engage you and make you feel special. He was intelligent and a wonderful conversationalist. He was a kind, loving, and affectionate man. He had a sense of adventure and a passion for flying and traveling. He was compassionate and considerate of others. He was a beautiful person who loved his family and was proud of each and every one of them. He was very special to me. I miss you John and you will forever be in my heart and in my memories.

To Vanessa Brooke and Elaine,
John was someone who I had the great pleasure to have worked wth for many years through Az Floor Covering Assn. He was a terrific President and through that time we also became good friends and talked often. My heartfelt condolences go to all of you. He had a heart of gold and that showed through his humanitarian efforts. I remember how excited he really was when he became a Grandpa. He will be sorely missed to those who had the pleasure to have known him. RIP my friend.

When I first moved to Kearny, Arizona in 1977, John was was in a number of my academic courses at Ray High School. He was outgoing, friendly and even then very civic minded. He made my brother Bo and I feel very welcome in a new place. Years and years would pass before I would see John again and when I did, I still saw the astute Senior in high school behind the specs and the warm, welcoming smile. With a gracious hug, we eased into conversation just as we had when we were kids. I am so proud to be counted among John's friends. He was a wonderful man and humanitarian and someone who easily inspired others to reach for the stars and be the best that they could be. God bless you John. You are forever in my heart and prayers .......

I and WE, YOUR community, will never, ever forget the wonderful man that was John Slater.

Forever and always,

John was the most beautiful man I knew. He is a true gentleman who cared for his family and friends. He had a faith that was beyond his immediate surroundings. He had a wonderful ability to stay calm and be considerate of others. John had great self-disipline in life, meticulous, self-confident but not arrogant. He followed through on his goals. He often told me, “I have done everything on my bucket list. Most of all he had the courage to do what was right. I love you John and miss you.

The news described John as a Tempe business man, but to me he'll always be the BEST man at my wedding. I will miss the laughter that came whenever he and my husband were together. Usually they would reminisce about their childhood in Kearny and continue to tease each other.
