DR. JOHN A. SLY, 78, on Aug. 28, 2004, of Forked River, NJ, died suddenly of a brain aneurism. Born on July 4, 1926 in Los Angeles, CA, he grew up in Morgantown, WV and Princeton, NJ. Dr. Sly graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa, and after earning an M.Ed., and Ph.D. from Harvard School of Education; he devoted his life to the education of others. In the 1950's and 1960's, he was the principal and headmaster of schools in Liberia and Nigeria (West Africa). He also served as a consultant in a veteran's agricultural training program in Ghana (West Africa). Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Sly spent 16 years as President of International School Services, based in Princeton, NJ. He ended his career as he had begun - as an educator, by working as a Senior Search Associate with Search Associates. John and his wife, Lucy, retired to Forked River, NJ where he became dedicated to various environmental projects focusing on the preservation of Barnegat Bay and its surrounds. He was vital to the founding and success of the Forked River Mountain Coalition, an organization committed to the preservation of the New Jersey Pinelands. Of all of his accomplishments, he was most proud of his family; his wife of 53 years, Lucy (Wilson); his 4 children John F., Melissa L., Abigail Kuncevich and her husband David Kuncevich; and 2 grandchildren, Nathan and Michael Kuncevich. He is also survived by his sister, Joanne and her husband Elija Hicks. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004 at 2 P.M. at the Village Lutheran Church, 701 Western Blvd., Lanoka Harbor, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to 'Save Barnegat Bay', 906-B Grand Central Avenue, Lavalette, NJ or to the 'Forked River Mountain Coalition, P.O. Box 219, Forked River, NJ. The family would like to extend our deepest and most sincere thanks to the Emergency Room Staff and the Nurses at the Southern Ocean County Hospital for their extraordinary care of this extraordinary man.
