John Walker Smith ABINGDON, Va. John Walker Smith, age 69, a well-known resident of Washington County, Va., passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born Dec. 24, 1942, in the Alvarado community of Washington County, a son of the late Larkin Hughes Smith and Trula Lunsford Smith. John lived his entire life in the area and was a former employee of VDOT with 30 years of service. He was the owner of John W. Smith Agri-Lime of Abingdon. He was an avid cattle farmer and was vice president of the board of directors for Big M Farm Supply. He was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Francis Smith. Survivors include his wife, Alicia Berry Smith of Abingdon; one son, Lewis Leon Smith and daughter-in-law, Micki Smith of Abingdon; one grandson, Dylan Smith and friend, Tannar Wilson; two sisters, Lora Jean Russell of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Terry Groseclose and husband, Larry, of Abingdon.; two brothers, Bobby Smith and wife, Betty, of Gray, Tenn., and Ray "Dink" Smith and wife, Karen, of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Jason Roark. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Willis Osborne officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday evening, prior to the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Greenwood Cemetery in the Alvarado community. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m. Active pallbearers will be Dylan Smith, Larry Groseclose, Jason Roark, Travis Groseclose, DeWayne Smith, Austin Spiva and Eddie Cullop. Honorary pallbearers will be his friends from the Dairy Queen Liars Club, Greg Smith, Dr. Bobby Smith, Mark Nelson, Sonny Nelson and Boyd Moretz. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Greenwood Cemetery, in care of Ray Smith, 26192 Denton Valley Road, Abingdon, VA 24211.
