EDEN - John Smith, Jr., 89, of Country Club Drive, died Tuesday morning, January 23, 2007, at Morehead Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 25, at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Smith was born September 13, 1917, in Lexington, to the late John Smith, Sr. and Atha Mae Walser Smith. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a Major in the U.S. Army Infantry Division serving in World War II. Mr. Smith graduated from North Carolina State College in 1938. Having served his community in many capacities, he was the past president of Meadow Greens Country Club and of the Eden Rotary Club. Mr. Smith is the retired chairman of the board of the company formerly known as John Smith and Sons, now J.S. of Eden Enterprises.
Surviving are son, John Smith, III and wife, Eunice of Eden; granddaughters, April Smith of Eden, Lynn Smith Paschall and husband, William "Buck" of Fredericksburg, Va.; and their daughter, Alexandra.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Thursday at Fair Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church of Eden, John Smith, Jr. Memorial Fund, 533 Greenwood Street, Eden, N.C. 27288.
