John Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2007.
ST. PAUL - John F. ‘Jack’ Smith was the second of five children of Claude and Madge Smith. Aside from the years he spent in the Navy during WWII, Jack lived his whole life as a farmer in St. Paul, Oregon. He considered St. Paul to be the best place on earth. He married Lillian Melby in 1949 and they raised three children. Lillian died in 1983, and ten years later he married Lou Ann Baty.He was preceded in death by wife, Lillian; sons, John Melby and baby Joseph Charles; and brother, Dave. He is very sadly missed by wife, Lou Ann; brothers, Jim and Sam; sister, Jane; sisters-in-law, Elaine and Claudia; daughter, Julie; son-in-law, Peter Cooper; daughter, Joanne; grandchildren, Aaron Cain, Cassandra Cain, Mackenzie Cain, Jared Smith, Tonya Coronado, Katie Coopersmith; seven great-grandchildren; and uncountable relatives and friends.Jack was a US Navy Motor Machinist’s Mate stationed in Cherbourg, France during WWII. He was a member of the St. Paul Rodeo Association, the St. Paul Cooperative Telephone Board, the St. Paul Feed bowling team and the St. Paul Mustangs. He loved to go hunting with friends in the fall, but found it difficult to kill living creatures.Jack loved his home, his family, baseball (especially the Mariners), and watching the crops grow. His door was always open to company. He was always ready to go for a drive, to watch Jeopardy or sports on television, to read another Louis L’Amour western novel, go out for some Chinese food, or to play a few hands of cards. Jack read the obituaries in the newspaper regularly, just to make sure he wasn’t in there! Well sir, today is the day he made it in there. Good bye, Jack. We love you and miss you. Nothing will ever be quite the same without you.A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wed., Feb. 14 at St. Paul Catholic Church, St. Paul Interment will follow in the St. Paul Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel, Woodburn.
