We think of John often and the amazing times we had with all the Springs. It was just such a warm sense of family and you were always embraced as being a part of their family. We will always hold a special place in our heart for John.

John will always be in our thoughts. We had so much fun spending time with him and Susan and family in Oregon over the years and he was the most kind giving man ever. We loved him. John and Doni Hamann

Susan, and family: This brings such sadness to me. I just found out about this. We have so many wonderful memories of coming to Portland and to Gearheart to be a part of so many activities with you all. The wedding in Astoria of Katie, and the anniversary of you and John Susan, and many more. I remember the time you let our son Josh step in and go canoeing with you to the island that you actually need tickets to go on and John so kindly took Josh along. That was so special for him. We so enjoyed your family and have missed seeing you over the years. I remember John as the kindest voice and eyes ever. Always soft spoken and always so friendly and polite to everyone. You two have always been an inspiration to me in raising my child. You and John were such wonderful parents to your children and I have always admired the relationship you two had with your kids and have tried to model that with my son Josh.I know you all will miss him so much and I am so saddened we did not know sooner. Bless you all and much love to each and everyone of you. John was the best!!!You are in our prayers and thoughts always.

Dear Susan, How well and happily I remember 1967! Professionally, Jack managed to lead us into the computer era during an extremely busy and hard charging time. Jack had a way of making the most complex issues appear simple and understandable. He knew just how to make things work out to everyone's liking! I learned so much from him!
Much more important, however, was the "away from work" time, the four of us spent together. Jack was the leader there as well, even though he was just learning Portland and Oregon. Such great times! Later, it was great watching his career bloom, even from a distance. I enjoyed hearing the details on the occasional visits you all had back in Portland. I am so sorry for your loss of Jack, but I am so very grateful for how long you both had each other. You are both such wonderfully special people.

Remembering our cousin for his kindness to our family and that one special Christmas he spent in New Hampshire decorating the tree and giving his mother one last holiday in the family home. I admired his caring nature.

Dearest Susan, Boofer, Katie, Tupper and Margaret, partners, spouses and grandkids -
We feel privileged to be part of your extended family, and mourn deeply with you in this time of grief.
Susan - you and John were a light in our lives, as you will be still, carrying his light within you, to warm you in a quiet place within your heart. John's deep friendship and gentle wit transformed our lives. We remember with joy the many, many days and evenings spent in Gearhart, dancing under the stars, chasing the dogs on the beach, sharing panini at the café, breakfasts overlooking the golf course. We remember John feeding the crackling fire under the 'mermaid' in the living room, hosting the long refectory table filled with incredible bounty - the strawberries, the salmon, the crusty bread, the wine and luscious desserts. We remember John roasting smores on the firepit on the lawn, John energetic, John relaxed, John laughing like a child.
And the painting, always the painting, Spring and Summer and Fall, inside, outside, scraping, rolling - keeping the magic and the beauty of every environment he lived in fresh and glowing.
And then the children - the countless children crowding John, snuggling round his chair listening to him read, his hands pushing boys and girls, small and large, on the tree swing, dogs running round and round his feet. Watching the endless balls he tossed fly in the air on the baseball field. The skies seemed always blue and sunny down in Gearhart.
And finally, we remember how his gentle nature and his kindness remained like a mantle round him even in his illness. He didn't need to know our names to look on all of us with so much love in his eyes.
Andrew and I can only feel a small part of your loss, and yet ours feels great. But his qualities are such that they will live on within all of us, and all of the many, many people whole lives he touched.
