Our hearts broke when we heard the news of John’s passing. When John came to Toronto in the mid 60’s he became like a brother to my late father Peter Aroukatos whom John nick named “Panara”. As far back as I can remember John was a part of our family. When he married and moved to the States he came back often to visit and brought his beautiful wife Georgia and later his children Tia and Theo. One Easter my dad packed all 5 kids into the car and drove us to Ohio to spend Easter with John and his family. It was a wonderful time in our childhood.
During his many visits over the years, John would sit patiently, and join the craziness along with the 4 hour meal my mom Vassiliki would put together. When we had families of our own we would make sure to bring our kids when his family would visit so that they too would understand the importance of the relationship. He was a brilliant accomplished man who was proud of his family (his greatest accomplishment).
After my dad passed, he was always calling to see how mom was and to share his news. A few years ago he surprised us and drove to Pickering to visit. Looking back now, I guess this was his way of telling us he might not be making these trips anymore. It was a wonderful visit as always, and he leaves us with the fondest memories. John was part of our family despite the miles that separated us and he will always hold a special place in our hearts. May his memory be eternal.
With much love
