John "Steve" Moseley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 10, 2023.
John Stephen "Steve" Moseley, 85, of Encinitas, CA, died on November 22nd, 2023 from complications of a stroke he suffered a week earlier.

Steve was preceded in death 18 months ago by his beloved wife of 61 years, Stephanie Smith Moseley. He is survived by his daughter Julie (Anthony) Berris and their children Jack, Conrad and Katina of Denver; son Grant (Molly) and their children Colton, Sawyer and Sadie of San Diego. Steve is also survived by his brother Bruce Moseley of British Columbia and his brother-in-law Richard Smith and family of Texas and Long Beach. He was preceded in death by his father David Leigh Moseley in 1981; mother Jean Hagenbuch Moseley in 1998 and brother Peter David Moseley in 2007.

Born in Santa Monica on March 29th, 1938 he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1956, where he was an All-American swimmer. Steve attended the University of Michigan where he swam; Long Beach City College where he played water polo and swam and went on to graduate from the University of Southern California in 1960 where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order Fraternity and also was on the water polo team.

.

After meeting Stephanie at a fraternity event at USC they were married on January 28, 1961. Upon graduating from USC, he began teaching at Bell High School. He went on to earn his Master's Degree from USC in 1969, before moving to Scripps Ranch in San Diego in 1970. While in San Diego he first taught and coached water polo at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista before moving to Southwest Junior High in San Ysidro to teach History and English along with coaching tennis and golf - a place he truly believed he made the greatest impact on all those he worked with, taught and coached.

Steve always lived a full and active life right up until the end. Among his many highlights:

-He bicycled 900 miles around Europe in the summer of 1960 with American Youth Hostel;

-Spent a year (1967-1968) in Bristol, England teaching at Rose Green High School when he was a Fulbright Scholar;

-Traveled around the United States with Stephanie, Julie and Grant for 2 months during the summer of 1979;

-Participated in 3 summer teaching fellowships: University of Massachusetts, Lowell; University of Colorado, Boulder and University of Virginia;

-Visited all 50 states and 6 continents.

Steve was involved in Boy Scouts for much of his life: first as a scout himself with Troop 22 in Brentwood where he achieved the rank of Eagle; then as Scoutmaster for his son Grant's Troop 616 in Scripps Ranch and then participating with his grandsons. His favorite adventure was completing a 14-day backpacking trek with Jack and Conrad in Philmont, NM in 2010 as the second oldest to ever attend. He cherished his scout connections especially his pen pal in Japan with whom he corresponded continually since 1951.

Steve's passion for sports continued beyond his illustrious collegiate swimming career, participating in Masters Swimming in which he held several world records and traveled to Morocco and other exotic places to compete. He didn't only compete, he was an avid sports fan attending all of his 6 grandchildren's games; watching Padres and Aztec games; high school CIF cross country and football competitions as well as his remarkable ability to find any kind of live sporting event to attend in whatever city he happened to be in.

Ever the learner, Steve continually visited historical sites throughout the country; was in multiple book clubs and was an avid genealogist. He also loved to spend his time playing golf, going to the beach, skiing (until age 82) and hiking in the Sierras (as recently as 6 weeks before his death).

Steve was a great mentor to fellow teachers, but especially to youth as a teacher, coach, scout leader, father, with his favorite role as a grandfather.

We will miss his positive outlook on everything, zest for living and always being ready for new adventures.

Fight On Dad. Give mom a kiss and have a "fine time" at the never-ending sports competitions.

There are no services planned, however the family intends to hold a Celebration of Life in the spring. For those wishing to make contributions in Steve's memory, we suggestion donations in his name to the Boy Scouts of America.

Dear Family & Friends of Steve Moseley; I had the honor and joy of teaching with Steve at Southwest Jr. High in San Ysidro (Sweetwater District in Chula vista). He was everyone's favorite! - students, teachers, friends! i can't recall - EVER- having a conversation with him that wasn't insightful, enlightening, helpful , joyful and / or super fun. What a "gem" of a human being. Steve will always be in my memories as a colleague (i taught history, too!) who loved participating in student-staff activities and school traditions. i can only imagine how much he is missed by his dear family/loved ones. He is surely smiling on all of you in heaven and guiding you from there :)

I just learned today that Steve passed away. I was deeply saddened when I heard that Stephanie passed away, and am saddened once again to learn that Steve is gone. I'm shocked that someone so active and vibrant has passed away. I first met Steve and Stephanie in 1971 when their daughter, Julie, and my daughter, Jennifer, became friends in elementary school in Scripps Ranch. We remained friends throughout the years, and when I moved to North Carolina I always saw them whenever I traveled back to CA to visit my family. It was always such a joy to see them, and I will miss them both tremendously. It was such a delight to be with Steve -- he was so bright, so interested in so many things, and was so kind and caring. He had a wonderful sense of humor. I want to express my deep sympathy to all his family. One of the things that brought him the most joy with spending time with his children and grandchildren. They are fortunate to have had such a wonderful father and grandfather, and anyone who has had the good fortune to have known Steve will miss him.

Everyone´s favorite teacher! He was my teacher at Southwest Junior High in the 90´s.

He made geography fun!! He was kind and easygoing! His voice was soothing with an occasional joke here and there. We all respected and loved him. It was one of those classes you looked forward to attending.

Mr. Moseley was my favorite junior high teacher in 1990-91. He was funny, and had great stories. One memory he shared with us, that he grew up with "Bobby" Redford. I always remember him running during his prep period. I work with teachers in the South Bay Area, asking teachers if they ever knew where Mr. Moseley retired or what had come of him. As an adult I wanted to find him and reach out. He was always a pleasure and on my last year in middle school I gave him a stuffed animal inside a balloon. I would visit and he would have my stuff animal still sitting in his classroom collecting dust. Always brought me a smile knowing that. I had asked a friend who also was a student to find him for me. Unfortunately she found his obituary and I was too late to see him once again. I would have loved to play a round of golf with him. His children and grandchildren should know how lucky I felt to have him as a mentor, he always treated his students with kindness. I´ll never forget his great sense of humor. Until we meet again Mr. Moseley.

He was my history/geography teacher in the early 90's at Southwest Jr. High. He was was one of my favorite teachers EVER! I remember we would run past his classroom during PE and yell, "Hey, Mr. Moseley!" and he would always take it with a great stride and a smile. He was very patient and caring. I have so many great memories of Mr. Moseley.

My condolences to the Moseley family.

Never forget our first meeting: Getting to know each other decades ago on occasion of a Christmas Evening in Pinneberg, Germany. Grant was spending a couple of months in Duesseldorf as far as I remember, and Michael suggested to spend Christmas time together, since his parents were planning to come over to Europe. We had never ever met before. Stephanie and Steve prepared for their traditional Egg Nogg at our home, we did for our traditional "Feuerzangenbowle", we had a wonderful time together - and ever since. We are very thankful for their friendship, good bye to both!

To the Moseley family, I am so sorry to hear of both Steve and Stephanie's passing. Today, Dec 12, was the first I heard of Steve passing. My very first thought was such a sadness for Stephanie as I wondered "What will she do without Steve?" Then I found out Stephanie had passed 18 months prior.
I knew how Steves' heart must have been so lonely.

I have not seen Steve of Stephanie in so many years, but I do remember their positive joy and energy and Stephanie was so supportive of my artwork. What an amazing life these two had. My heart goes out to the family.
I wanted to leave this song, I just heard for the first time today.

Steve was a mentor to many teachers, his kindness and creativity was amazing. I taught with him 5 years at Southwest Middle. 1990 -1995 we went to swim meets, I was his swim connection, he would send over a student with a note, "need some taper workouts?" We did some car pooling together, I leared about lots of his adventures. He and his wife helped me with my son's elementary school progression and advise. Steve truly made an impact on my life, great person and mentor. His students loved him! Truly a great guy! He made a positive impact on many lives!

I was a high school classmate of Stephanie Smith, Steve's future wife, at University High School in West Los Angeles. We were drawn together by sharing the same birthdate. Many years later, when my husband and I relocated to San Diego, Stephanie and I met up again and I learned that Stephanie and I were both married mid-year of our college senior year--just one day apart. Just as compatible as Steph and I were, our husbands became dear friends too. We traveled with the Moseleys, and celebrated many occasions with dinners together. After Stephanie's passing, we still met Steve for breakfast after each of his trips through the midwest and eastern states and heard of his adventures visiting historical sites, museums and local baseball games.

Steve not only loved traveling, reading and swimming, but he also fell in love with knitting. He unabashedly joined the women's knitting groups in S.D. North County with Stephanie. Not only did he impress the ladies with his knitting talents, but he charmed them as well with his friendly and outgoing personality.

Steve, you will be missed by so many friends. May you and Stephanie find eternal happiness.

Mr. Moseley was my History and English teacher back with Southwest was a junior high school. He was a wonderful teacher and taught me so much over the two years that I had the privilege to be taught by him. I have very fond memories of him and of our classes especially my 9th grade English class and studying Shakespeare and Dickens and his stories about swimming in Santa Monica. Thank you so much for sharing these wonderful stories about him and all he accomplished. He will be deeply missed. Sincere condolences to your family.

I met Steve at Southwest Junior High in 1984. We hit it off immediately and remained friends for 40 years. "Live Like Steve" should be a motto that we all strive to attend.
