John Summers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 30, 2007.
CHATHAM - Surrounded by his children and grandchildren, John C. Summers of Chatham died in the home that his father built some hundred years before, on Monday, May 28, 2007. He was 65 years old.

John did not take the path most easily traversed nor did the path rise up to greet him. His life was a struggle. It was difficult, but he shouldered the burdens of this world with dignity and a serene stoicism. He never made excuses or placed blame on anyone for any circumstance. The buck always stopped with him.

He enjoyed his early years as a standout athlete, playing many sports but excelling in baseball. He held many jobs over the years. He spent a good part of his life living off the sea that he so loved and revered. In his later years, he worked as a clerk in various retail positions, always enjoying the company of his customers and co-workers; especially when they had a particularly good joke to share.

Although never a wealthy man, he would give the shirt off his back for someone in need. He was especially generous with his children, often giving more than he could reasonably afford. His children always came first.

He had the heart of a lion and was extremely intelligent, often dropping pearls of wisdom when they were least expected and most needed.

In a world that is so full of selfishness, opportunism and materialism, he had an innate ability to rise above the reality around him and he became a completely selfless man. His priority was always those close to him, those whom he loved. Perhaps it is this selflessness that is the most impressive measure of a man and a quality that society should endeavor to place a much higher value on.

He is survived by his three children, Sean, Todd and Megan; daughter-in-law, Rose; his sister, Ashlynne Roy; his four grandchildren, Kiera, Sarah, Sean and McKenzie; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held in The Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, on Thursday, May 31, from 5 to 7 p.m.

A graveside service will be held in Peoples Cemetery on Saturday, June 2, at 10 a.m.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 765 Attucks Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Someone once asked me what I notice first about a person. I said that I notice if they are smiling. Your father/grandfather always had a huge smile on his face and a warm welcome whenever I saw him; it was a pleasure. I believe he passed that trait on to all of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Uncle John and I became very close during my adolescent age as I was not the easiest teenager to handle, but he coped!
He remained a father figure to all of his Sisters Ashlynne five children never forgetting our birthdays with cards and calls of laughter! A character absoulutely, a master seafood BBQ chef, (when he came to the south he flew in what his Sis says was real seafood) it was the best we all had ever had!
Thank You So MUCH MY SUMMERS Cousins & Family for assisting my Mothers reunited visted with her brother just two weeks ago!
Uncle John you will now be with OMA YA"ll two Behave yourselves!
Opps! I forgot I am speaking to YOU!
Thank You for making me a part of who I am!
You remain in my heart!
AHOY YOUNG MAN!
Love,
Ashlynne L. Roy
