Johnny and I grew up as cousins across the alley from each other, but cousins doesn't define us...he was my brother. I am two years older but he was two years wiser and kept us out of mischief and into innocent adventures involving kites and marbles and hide and seek. He was a gentle sharer and a loyal friend. Though we lived far apart all our adult lives we would meet in the middle in Schuyler, Nebraska and shamelessly reminisce with the conviction that we had had it all in the best of times. And we had.
Leave breadcrumbs, Johnny, and I will follow you.. Your devoted Barbara

My brother John exhibited many fine qualities as a young lad, growing up in the small midwestern town of Schuyler, Nebr. He was a class leader and played high school football with much heart and character. Although his team didn't win often, they perservered, a quality my brother carried throughout his life. He was best known for his faith and love of family and community, demonstrated many times throughout his life. His ethics and high morals were known to many and were not phony; they came from within. I am privileged to have had a great brother like him. His fishing buddy/little sister will miss their long talks and family times together. He was my hero.

I was a student with John in Schuyler. He was a fine man and this was a very fitting contribution. I am sure he will be missed by many people.

Dr. Swanda, you will always be remembered as an enlightened professor and mentor to so many of your students, including me, in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and in your help on my graduate thesis in Business Ethics. May God's blessings be upon you and your family. Susanne Spilski, Ph.D.
