John was the biggest influance on me during my 4 years at Lakeland College. Always positive and full of life lessons that I share with others to this day. Always had time for others no matter how busy he was. A very giving man. Can't wait to meet up with him again in heaven someday. What a wonderful person he was to everyone who crossed his path. Forever a friend...

My sympathies to the Thome family. He was my English teacher at Chilton and left a lasting impression with his passion and humor. He of course married my favorite English teacher!! I enjoyed the few times I ran into John while I taught at Brillion. Also Hi to Darlene.

To the family of John Thome. He greatly impacted my life and was a part of the decision why i became a physical educator. His willingness to make peope happy and teach was awesome. It was hard not to have a great time around him. He will be missed by many. We have told a lot of stories started with his name. He was a great coach and even better person. Sorry for your loss.

The family of Coach John Thome:
Grief can be so hard, but our special memories help us cope. Remembering you and your loved one today and always. The memories are many, meeting Coach in the Fall of 1977 at Lakeland College gave me great inspiration. I knew I was in the right place. Football was great for the four years I was there, being the Assistant Trainer gave me a lot of time with coach. Making sure his players were ready. The teaching he gave to each of them will always be remembered. I am sorry that I could not make the services, but my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Peace and God Bless.

Coach Thome took no quarter and gave no quarter but he did share his zest for life with all his student athletes. What I admired was seeing him in church every Sunday and the way he was a father to his kids.

Dear Thome Family,
It is with such sadness we learned of Coach's passing. He is so often spoken of when we get together with Lakeland friends. He touched our lives in so many ways and we have passed on those lessons to our children. "When special people touch our lives, they teach us how to live." Coach sure did that for both of us. People come into our life for a reason and we feel blessed that our paths crossed and our lives are that much better because of people like John D. Thome. Thank you for sharing him with us. With love, prayers, and our deepest sympathy.

To the Thome family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficlt time. John always made time to say hello and he had the tremendous ability to make you feel welcomed. About 40 years ago my parents rented a cottage on Crystal Lake. John and Darlene spent a couple of days with us, it was fun and I will remember it always. I can not remember a time that I did not see john with a smile and an occasional joke. Great man. You have my deepest sympathy, sincere prayers and humble thoughts.

John and I grew up together in Port Washington. In my mind he is still that mischievous, curly-haired blonde boy on whom all the girls had a crush! Although one class behind me, I still followed his athletic career and since we lived in Sheboygan, it continued when he coached in nearby communities. He was a great guy, and I know how much he will be missed. Our condolences to his entire family.

Coach, there aren't too many times that my fellow teammates and i don't speak of the many memories we shared together both in practice and on the field. Your attitude, carisma, and honesty are things that I always appreciated and know I speak on behalf of many in saying we'll miss you!

I never had Mr. Thome as a coach, but I was fortunate to have him as a teacher. I shared the a birthday with him and he always used to say the great ones were born on that day. That pops into my head every year. I think he told every student that they were his favorite, but he was truly one of my favorites. I don't think I could ever forget him if I tried. He was a great man and it was an honor to know him.

Dear Coach, I only called a few men that. You are the one I speak of as having the most honored place in my life. I have spoken of you often and what great things you did for me and for many young men trying to become real men. You taught us how to play football and never give up in the game. I'm using that ideal today. You even showed us how to give public speeches with great vim and vigor. Go into the corn Coach, I love who you are in my life. See you soon. Don Cerra ‘73 #86
