Dr. Utendale was one of my professors at WWU during my senior year in 1980. He was kind enough to write a recommendation for me for my Peace Corps application. I was accepted and went on to teach music at TumuTumu Girls High School in near Nyeri, Kenya. Just one more example of someone who's life he touched ever so briefly, yet profoundly.
Thank you Dr. Utendale!

Class act as a hockey coach, an inspirational leader and educator. Privilege to have shared time on the ice and his classroom. My gratitude Coach Utendale.

Mickey, Rich & Rob
It was great to see friends again at John's Memorial Celebration. Hearing all the stories brought backs memories I had long forgotten. Looking back at how John was a large part of my life from little baseball, minor hockey and College Hockey. I can now understand (being a father and husband) how much of a commitment it takes and everyone who was involved benefited greatly from John's generousity. My wife Teri graduated from WWU in education and John served as a mentor and a friend to help her achieve her Masters. John was always a calming force in her studies and open to give advice, direction and always a great story to laugh about. We will always be thankful to you, Mickey and John for all you both did for us in our lives. Thank you

Mickey, we are sorry to hear the sad news that John was passed on. Although it has been many years since we have been in touch, I still have fond memories of our times together in St.Albert & the W.Coast. Marnie has kept me informed about you all; so there has been a slight connection.

I hope the fond memories that you have of your years with John will help you through this sad time. Give us a ring at 604 926 9367 if you get up this way.

Regards,

Allan and Joyce

It came as quite a shock to hear of Dr. Utendale's death from his sister in-law. I only knew about John from her and his brother Paul whom I have become good friends with. I am really sorry to hear of his death as he fought so hard against his cancer.

My very sincere condolances to all of his family.

Kind regards,

Patricia Jones from the Netherlands

I only met John once. He and Mickey were kind enough to let me share their home for an evening just prior to 3rd chemotherapy session in Victoria. I shall always remember his kind and supportive words.

My love and condolences to your family, John.

Although we didn't know John well, (we are friends with his brother Paul

and sister-in-law Diane), we were saddened to hear of his passing. He

was a fine man, very dignified...a "class act". Our condolences to all

of his loved ones

We will always consider ourselves most fortunate to have known John. He was a great host, guest, partner in cards, trivia or other silly games we played over the years. He was a wonderful travelling companion, whether we were on a beach in Hawaii or sitting on grotty little balcony in a crummy B&B in England - we will miss you greatly dear friend.

Our thoughts are with his loving family.
