John VANCE

Gen Vance was the finest Commander I served under in my 36 years of service. I was a section commander with 3 Mech Cdo in Germany in 1970-1971. At the completion of our exercises he held a unit review with great stories of what went well and tales of people getting lost, etc. Everyone felt a close connection with the unit and our CO, and what a fine unit it was. I was returning to Canada in Dec 71 and at the unit party he came to our table trying to convince my wife and I to stay. He said he would arrange it the next day. We declined his request but I will never forget his asking. We had a great unit, well trained, with excellent leadership. I have just learned of his passing. RIP

When I worked for LGen Vance in the 70's, i thought he was a super person, and a gentleman. He will be missed.

Vance Family. I was an admirer of Gen Vance and highly respected him from our first meeting. A true soldier and statesman. I share your grief in his loss. May he have light winds and soft landings

I first met your Dad during summer Phase training at the RCS of I in Camp Borden in the mid fiftees. Much has been said about his professionalism and his personal qualities. I will only add that in all of my contacts with him, he was a class act.

Lieutenant General John (Jack) Vance. There was no better man that I came across during my 36 year military career.
As a Major in charge of Charlie Company 2RCR he taught me how to care for and respect your people.

I felt so much better for have known Jack. He steered me in the right direction.
As a sign of respect and high regard for Jack. I asked him if he would be my guest speaker for my retirement dinner. I was pleasantly surprised, when he agreed to do it. After all it had been a great many years since we had seen one another. This was also not long after the passing of his beloved wife. (Sheila)
We would always say that no matter how much time had passed that Jack and Sheila would not only recognise you and your wife, but they would even know your names.
My heart breaks for you and your large family, at the loss of such a special man.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. To lose someone you love is to alter your life forever. New people will come into your life but the hole in your heart becomes the shape of the one you lost and no one else can fit it.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends.

A truly Great Uncle. He always made us feel welcome and included; always engaged us in intelligent discussion; always had a kind word, a quick quip, and a ready smile. He will forever be remembered in the highest regard.
