Coach Varone was a great cross county / track coach and a father figure to our team. He trained us physically and emotionally in an effort to prepare us for a track meet and, unbeknownst to us, was helping us prepare for the bigger plan- real life. See you in Heaven coach! Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of John. I met John a few years after he graduated from the UM and was still playing in Canada. We became good friends and double dated with his wive's Harriet and Pat.Both lovely women. One of my fondest memories was being invited to his parent's home for a real Italian dinner, to ceebrate bithdays, to eat at Sullie's barbecue restaurant, to represent his sister Joanne, to travel with John to the spring training camp of the Montreal baseball team to check out a theapy device, always with the knowledge that John was a stalwart friend who always had your back; who always lived up to his end of a deal and rarely complained about his own personal problems. I was kept current on John's progress by Sandy and we talked about him often.I was unable to attend the service but as i grow older i cannot think of anything better than renewing our friendship down the road.In my mind he was one of the best. With love and friendship,Howie Silverstein.

"HE ONLY TAKES THE BEST"
God saw that he was getting tired, A cure was not to be. So he put his arms around him and whispered, come with me. With tearful eyes, we watched him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
I love you honey.

To the Varone Family
Coach John Varone first year at Norland was my junior year. Although he was not my position Coach, I was able to observe him on a daily basis. Not a loud vocal Coach, he did most effectively get his point across to the backs he coached. His years of service coaching and teaching speaks for the many students like myself who benefited from him, and from the other Coaches and Teachers. Rest in peace knowing you left this world a better place than you found it.
