John White Obituary

John "Jack" W. White
1946-2018
John "Jack" W. White, 71, passed away on March 11, 2018 from health complications after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jack was a beloved son, brother and uncle. He was a sports enthusiast who loved adventuring in Idaho's great outdoors and is the founder of one of downtown Boise's most well-known drinking establishments, 10th Street Station.
Jack was born in Renton, Washington on October 19, 1946 and enjoyed a childhood in Kennydale, Washington with his brother, Jim, and his sister, Jenan. Jack graduated from Renton High School in 1965 and continued his education at Central Washington University. He graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in art. Following graduation, Jack served in the U.S. Army National Guard as an SP4.
Jack lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 70s. While he was living in California, he researched hundreds of bars along the California coast from San Francisco to San Diego. Jack moved to Boise in 1973 and put his bar research to good use. He founded the popular and award-winning bar, 10th Street Station, in 1982. The bar is located in the Idanha Hotel and was voted one of the "Best of Treasure Valley" by Idaho Statesman readers because it most resembled the bar on the television show Cheers in its exterior and ambiance. After selling 10th Street Station, Jack managed family businesses in Boise.
Jack pursued a wide range of activities and interests. He loved to ski, golf, paddle board and windsurf. He also played volleyball and softball. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of sports figures and statistics, and could tell an interested listener about almost any game in nearly every sport. Jack collected sports memorabilia and antique signs. Many of his treasures still hang on the walls of 10th Street Station. Jack especially enjoyed exploring the Oregon Coast with his dog, Spike.
Jack was a loyal friend and uncle who attended almost all of his high school class reunions. He did his best to watch most of his nieces' and nephews' sporting events — especially when it entailed flying nearly 3,000 miles to the Hula Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Agnes White; and brother-in-law Larry McNeight. He is survived by his brother Jim White and Jim's wife Stephanie; his sister Jenan White McNeight; nephews Troy McNeight, Todd McNeight and Jason White; and nieces Tami McNeight Bugni and Laura White Barton; 12 grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and his dog Spike. Jack's family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to his dear friend Debra Burt for being supportive of Jack and his beloved dog, Spike, during this difficult time in Jack's life.
A graveside service will be held at Dry Creek Cemetery in Boise at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 17. Donations may be made in Jack's memory to a charity of your choice.
