John Wright Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2024.
John David Wright, affectionately known as David, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2024, in Atoka, Tennessee, at the age of 91. Born on January 3, 1933, David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and community member, whose life was marked by service, love, and dedication.

David proudly served his country as a Private in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed in Selfridge, Michigan. Following his military service, he embarked on a 29-year career as a U.S. Postal Carrier in Memphis, becoming a familiar and friendly face to many on his mail route.

On July 20, 1963, David married Lydia Ann McDill, the love of his life. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. He is survived by his beloved wife Lydia, his daughters LuAnn Throgmorton (Paul) and Liza Rinehart (Chris), and his son Rob Wright (Lorrie). David was a proud grandfather to Alex Wright Dawson (Zach), Marlee Wright, Sam Wright, Adam Throgmorton (Bailey), Hunter Rinehart, and Bowen Rinehart.

An avid gardener, David was known for his generosity in sharing his bountiful harvests, particularly his prized tomatoes. His passion for gardening was matched by his love for reading, especially on military history, and his joy in exploring the great outdoors. He cherished camping trips across the United States, with memorable journeys to Alaska, the Midwest, and annual visits to Arkansas lakes with the McDill and Champagne families. David was a hunter and trapper, receiving the West Tennessee Fur-Takers Trapper of the Year award in 2004. He enjoyed several hobbies during his retirement, including carpentry, house painting, locksmithing, raising livestock, and dairy work.

A faithful member of the Salem Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, David served as a deacon and was actively involved in the Cemetery Committee. His unwavering faith and commitment to his community were evident throughout his life.

David was preceded in death by his parents, John Hunter and Emma Louise Wright. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, service, and love.
