John Zeiss Obituary

John Zeiss, age 75, a retired Appleton ophthalmologist, passed away on Thursday morning, June 24, 2010. John was born in Williston, North Dakota, son of the late Edward Zeiss and Alice Hansen Zeiss who currently resides in Tacoma, Washington. John was a 1956 graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and in 1960 graduated from the Northwestern University School of Medicine. He served his internship in Evanston, Illinois, which was followed by a three-year ophthalmology residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison. In the mid 1960's he served in the United States Air Force as the Chief Ophthalmologist for the Pacific Northwest. In 1966, the family moved to Appleton, and John joined his father's medical practice. He continued to care for patients in and around Appleton until his retirement at the close of 1999, at which time he and Phyllis retired to their home on Crab Lake in Presque Isle, Wisconsin. John is survived by his mother: Alice Zeiss of Tacoma, Washington; his wife: Phyllis Zeiss of Presque Isle, Wisconsin; two children: David Zeiss of Grinnell, Iowa and Margot Zeiss of Madison; a sister: Susan Paul Wollwage of Lakewood, Washington; and a sister-in-law: Rowan Zeiss of Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his father: Edward Zeiss and a brother: Todd Zeiss. A memorial service for Dr. Zeiss will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 11, 2010 at FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 724 E. South River Street in Appleton, with Rev. Dr. Steve Savides officiating. The family has suggested that memorials be directed to Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin. Wichmann Funeral Home 537 N.
