May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I was privileged to meet Johnnie at the week-long SMU AP workshop the summer of 2006. We compared notes during our lunch break about having lived in Laredo,TX,and it was delightful to converse with him. He was a "gentle"man with so much to share with all who were fortunate enough to meet him. I attended an AP Lit workshop in Richardson, TX, in late November conducted by your colleague and friend, Karen Katz. I asked her to give you my regards as she mentioned that you were to meet the next day. I hope that she remembered to tell you. I felt a special connection with you,Johnnie, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have met you. Vaya con Dios querido amigo.

I met Johnnie Eng in the summer of 2003, when he was the AP Spanish Language workshop lecturer at Saint Mary's Hall. Very interesting... he became an angel this academic year, as I started teaching at the same academic institution. It feels as if Johnnie will always be amongst us. What I really learned from him was the value of sharing. I have attended many workshops and participated in various conferences, but his were always about sharing creative ideas and learning from each other. He created the "traffic light lesson" to teach various subjunctive expressions. Gracias Johnnie for all the professional recommendations with the College Board on my behalf. Rest in peace y que Dios te bendiga.

Inténtalo otra vez, no te rindas

This is a sad day because I have to said Adios to a great colleague, mentor and friend. We were "certified" as Consultants for the College Board AP Program the same day and presented together in many Conferences and Summer Institutes. After he retired when any of my participants asked me if I knew Johnnie I would say that he was my "AP brother" because we had seen each other and visit so many times when we presented at the same conference; but I also said that he was the brother all wished we would have because of his personal qualities. We will always remember and miss you, Johnnie! My condolences to his family and friends and everybody who loved him.

God needed another angel for this Christmas and we lost a very special friend. Johnnie, please teach the angels Spanish in your personal style that added so much to the lives of all your students. Thank you for allowing me to share such short AP times with you, but your impact will be forever on all of us. Use those angel's wings to see the world from a higher perspective.
Hasta luego; nos veremos. Que descanses en paz, Amigo.

Those of us who knew Johnnie Eng are indeed fortunate, and his loss is keenly felt. He leaves a strong legacy of his intellectual children and grandchildren who are better for having known him and studied under him. At the AP Readings in San Antonio, he welcomed us as if he were the host to each and every one of us. We will miss him.

During the summer of '06, I was fortunate to attend the AP Spanish Language workshop for high school teachers held in San Antonio. Johnnie was the instructor for the workshop, and he served as such a positive and informative mentor to all of us for the week. He encouraged us to network with each other, and was a wealth of information on preparing students for the AP Exam.

He related to the class not only as an instructor, but on a personal level, sharing his teaching experience and viewpoints with us during the week.

I offer my sincere sympathy to his family and friends.

I am delighted that Texas Foreign Language Association Board and Members had the opportunity to invite Johnnie to our TFLA Awards Luncheon this past month to recognize and to say goodbye to a very dear friend and wonderful educator.
Personally, Johnnie has had a profound influence on my personal and professional life. I have worked with him on the College Board institutes and conferences, AP Reading, TFLA, and our pre-AP textbook. Every minute of working with and knowing Johnnie was an absolute delight and learning experience -- I always had total faith in his incredible expertise and friendship. We have been down many good roads together, for that I am grateful. In the past few months, Johnnie has had the courage to walk the valleys and peaks always moving forward!
