Johnny Box

Johnny M. Box, 74 years old, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014, after a courageous battle with Leukemia during the past year.

He was originally from Sheffield, Alabama, son of Inez and Ronald P. Box, and brother of Ronald Box Jr., and Peggy Ann George. Johnny attended Sheffield Senior High School, joined the National Guard in 1955, and joined the Air Force in 1962. While serving, he met and married his wife, Mary Alice, from Superior, Arizona, and they lived in different areas of the United States, and throughout Sheffield during their 45 years of marriage. Mary Alice preceded him in death on July 19, 2006.

Johnny was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, diving, rock climbing, canoeing, and fishing. He was also a pilot, as well as a keen student of history, and talented musician. He was employed with Reynolds Aluminum Corporation for well over 30 years. After retiring, Johnny remained active in the Sheffield First Church of the Nazarene serving on the board and several committees and as a member of the choir. Johnny was a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He inspired and touched many lives with his humble and quiet example of a Christian life of service to others.

Surviving family members include daughter, Johanna M. Box-Fox and son-in-law, Barry W. Fox; daughter, Lani Singleton, son-in-law, Shayne Singleton; granddaughter, Ava S. Hlavacek; and grandson, Ethan A. Singleton; brothers-in-law, Tommy and Fred Murrieta; and sister-in-law, Karen Murrieta, of Superior, Arizona; adopted daughter, Mayra Guijarro, of Miami, Florida; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to services in church from noon-1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Sheffield First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield, Alabama immediately following services.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the doctors and nurses who helped and supported them in their time of need, and also a special note of thanks to the nurses and staff of Keller Hospice for their kind services.
