I met Mr. Unitas at a celebrity Night at Bromwell's bar in Fullerton md in 1984 or 1985, He walked pasted and I yelled The Greatest Quarter Back in the world and he walked over and shook my hand and asked my name , He was so nice that he talked with me for a good while, and I got him to sign my shirt and he did and then he drew a funny picture on my shirt and told me he dont do much of those for any body, But I Loved talking and Laughing and the drawing on my shirt with his signature .Great Memories and a great man to talk with me for that long. Never forget, I take that shirt out and tell everyone about the Golden arm did this. Thank you Mr Unitas

I grew up loving the Baltimore colts and idolizing the greatest quarter back of all time...Johnny was always such a gentleman when I had the several chances to meet him. It is hard to believe you have been gone 21 years....RIP and God bless..

As 20 years since this loss is now approaching, let's never forget. We are unlikely to ever see another true giant like the one and only golden arm with his genuine humility. One of a kind.

Johnny was my hero when I was a boy in the 50's and his example of hard nose work ethic has followed me all my life. All I have to do is close my eye and picture a crew cut and high tops and I am back in the old living room watching the Colts on a snowy black and white set! Thanks for giving me a role model all those years ago Johnny U!!!

No matter how today's stats may indicate that your record has been broken, you were, and will always be, the Greatest Quarterback of all time. I still, and will always, cherish the autographed picture that you gave me in 1992. RIP Johnny U.

When I was 13 and sick in the hospital John came to see me and his visit was a Godsend. One week later, I returned home thanks to God and the healing HE sent to me through John Unitas. This world was a better place when John was here. Thank God for Number 19.

I lived in Baltimore as a kid in the 50's and i just loved Johnny U. Even after I moved to Texas in the 60's, Johnny U. and the Colts were my team. Johnny Unitas was the hero of all heroes and quite simply, the best.

Dear John,
On this the 10th anniversary of your passing, you are still missed and remembered by many. As you signed in Harv's copy of your book "Pro Quarterback: My Own Story Johnny Unitas": "Good friends are hard to find" meant a lot to him when you signed his book and will always have a special meaning to him. He feels very blessed to have been among one of your "friends." May you continue to rest in peace.

Mister Unitas, you were truly a class act. As far as I am concerned, you Sir are the Greatest Pro Football Quarterback of all time. You played when Pro Football was a much tougher game, especially on Quarterbacks. You performed in a superb manner, and you were always a down to earth guy. Many of today's quarterbacks in the NFC and AFC are stars, but they're not in the same league as you. Rest easy Mister Unitas, as you continue to throw completions on that grand Football field in the sky.

He was REAL! He spoke to everyone the same way.

MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM, MR. QUARTERBACK, THE GREATEST EVER. SOMEONE ONCE SAID "YOU CAN COMPARE OTHER QB'S TO UNITAS BUT NO ONE EVER COMPARES UNITAS TO ANYONE ELSE." THERE IS NO COMPARISON. HE IS UNEQUALED, UNPARALLED AND SIMPLY 'THE BEST THERE EVER WAS.'THE N.F.L.SHOULD HAVE RETIRED NO.19 ON ALL TEAMS WHILE HE WAS STILL LIVING, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ULTIMATE TRIBUTE.

I have followed your career from the beginning in 1956. Nobody since has created such excitement as you and your Baltimore Colts! The 1958 playoff game against the NY Giants is still the most exciting game ever. In an era when you could kill the quarterback and beat up the receivers, you stood out as the best. You are an inspiration to many and remain the epitomy of a true athlete. God Bless you and your family.

I grew up with all the "old Colts" in Baltimore and lived very near Johnny in Timonium. He never forgot a name once he met you and never forgot mine. I would see him frequently at the Timonium post office and other areas and he would always stop to chat. What a guy! What a Man! They don't make them like that anymore. Those were the true heroes our children could look up to, sorry, NOT the sports figures of today. I'm getting ready to go to a Super Bowl party in a little while here in Florida and I'm STILL rooting for the "COLTS"! They may have moved from Baltimore but they're still the Colts, wherever they go! Let's win the Super Bowl for The Golden Arm!!!!

I know it is never to later to show a person sympathy. When I think of football Johnny's name comes to mind. I remember my late husband watching all the Colt's football game. Johnny is and always will be a wonderful man and a great football player.

There has never been a more heroic, more astonishingly effective quarterback then Johnny Unitas.
The most extraordinary memorial to Unitas is in the New York Times Magazine at the end 0f 2002. The way in which neither the colts nor the league took care of him after he walked off the field with the burden of so many injuries -- that broken noze, that incrediblly dogged persistence -- it broke me heart when I read it.

Rest In peace, Johnny. Millions of people will always remember you.

Well John the Colts are back in Baltimore and they are in the play-off game with the Baltimore Ravens. This game is being played by the Ravens in your honor and you are being honored in a big way. We have shirts that your family allowed your picture to be on and the name UNITAS 19 on the back. If the Ravens do win and advance to the Super Bowl it will be a tribute to you and all the old Baltimore Colts who have gone on to the football field above. Look down on us tomarrow and as we would say Let's Go You Baltimore Colts(now RAVENS) and put that ball across the line and Win for old Baltimore. You will be in everyone whoever watched a game at Memorial Stadium and saw the greatest QB who ever stepped onto the fields thoughts and we hope to win one for Baltimore and Maryland and March on to Victory in Memory of John Unitas.

To The Unitas Family: Recently I received from a friend a beautiful story and picture that was in The Baltimore Sun I have saved this and I am going to have it laminized so I can put it on a memorial that I will make for my husband who lived during John's times and loved this man for his abilities and values in football. His death has hurt many of us in Baltimore who would never leave our seats until the end because some how or other John would throw that winning ball. God Bless all of you during this Christmas holiday and it was Baltimore's pleasure to be able to say we had the best QB in football ever and he was a BALTIMORE COLT.

Has kids we wanted to be him.Our fathers praised him.Baltimore loved him.And football fans in general miss him.But all the feelings never go away.To be him,to praise his play, the love and we miss him.The way the game of football is played today and promoted is because of this one man Johnny Unitas. The greastest quaterback?maybe not on record. But he is and always will be the GREATEST FOOTBALL PLAYER THAT EVER WAS.A leader on and off the field.

It was really cool growing up in the shadow of Memorial Stadium during the sixties. It was like the colts played in my backyard. All the kids would pretend to be Johnny U ,throwing to Raymond Berry and winning the game in the final minutes Later in my late teens I worked at The Golden Arm Restaurant and got to know Mr Unitas on a personnal basis and found him to be a fine boss and friend Baltimore was lucky to have him

Well, John you would have been very proud, the first pre-season game was the anniversary of when 25 years ago you first stepped foot on the field and they honored you and the family. There were grown men crying. Also, the RAVENS opener was great 27-0 over the Dolphins and Ray is the MVP of the NFL this week. Rest with my husband in peace he was your greatest fan.

To the Unitas Family, I was at the Raven game on Friday and really enjoyed the tribute to Johnny Unitas. It brought tears to my eyes as he is a great football player and our hero in Baltimore. He will never be forgotten by his loyal fans. When he passed it took a lot from the fans who loved your husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend to the people of Baltimore. He was never to busy to stop and talk to his fans or sign an autograph and the people of Baltimore will long honor this great man.

To The Unitas Family...I like you have suffered the loss of a husband, father and my parents and then on July 12,2002 I lost a 25 year old granddaughter by a sleepy driver. My grandchild I am sure has meet your husband and father JOHN UNITAS because he was my husbands hero. It is the hardest thing in the world to l ose someone you love and John was loved by the state of Maryland and all the Baltimore COlt Fans, he made football what it is today. The Ravens are doing a good job but I can still hear my husband if he were living and at a game and we were only a few points behind don't leave yet John will pull it thru, I am sure the world is unfortunate not to have know a great man and football player like Mr. Jonn Unitas. I pray that you are able as a family to go on and keep the Unitas name alive in Maryland not that you have to because John already has. God Bless You all. The Adams FAmily from Dundalk,Md

He use to go every Sunday he told me because he loved the Colts, you and my Uncle was in the band. Had he been alive he would have been very sad to have seen your passing. I did fuss at one time because my mom named me Constantine but after seeing that your middle name was the same I was very proud. One of your biggest fans Bill Adams is up there with you and I know he is glad to be in such company, his grandaughter Jenn is with him I am sure but un-fortunatly her dad is a Steeler Fan. We know the best thing the Steelers ever did was send you to the Baltimore Colts. John you live in the hearts of any person in this city who ever saw you walk on that field in those black high tops and put that bal in the air. John I played in the Baltimore Colt Band when you played and what a thrill to see you come out of that tunnel with your head down and those black high tops on the Number 19 was magic for the Colt fans. Many times my dad sat in the stands so cold his nose was red and he hated cold weather but he would never leave as long as you had the last ball. The game that was fogged over he sat with his radio in his ear and listened because he knew you and Ray would make that last touchdown to win the game. My dad was a true fan of Johnny Unitas and until the day of his death in 2000 he would say their will never be another Johnny U. I know when you went thru those gates he was there to greet you and let you know that he was a Colt fan. We now support the Ravens but it isn't like those old days when you walked onto the field and the fans went wild. You were and always will be he best Quarterback in the history of football. I am so glad I had the opportunity to be part of the Unitas years. God Bless your family as I know how hard it is to lose a father.

As a young boy in the early sixties, like everyone else, I was a "big" admirer of the man Johnny Unitas." We walked like you, through passes like you and, tried to carry ourselves as you did in life.

I'll always remember you tossing passes to me and my friend at Western Maryland College. What a thrill for us that has lasted till this day.

Later on I knew you as a friend and golfing partner during our many charity events.

I always considered it an honor to know you as a hero and friend.

Johnny retired when I was 8 years old, and I never saw Johnny play, but I grew up in Baltimore , and I knew Johnny was a Colts legend . I read his biography as a little girl and admired him has a hard working man and a caring husband and father. I idolized Johnny as a dedicated citizen of Baltimore and thought of him as a father figure. He set an example for me as how a person should live a very decent and upright life. I will be visiting "home" this week and home will be a lesser place without "dad". I love U, Johnny.

My deepest sympathies to the Unitas family in this time of sorrow. John was one of the most beloved athletes in Baltimore's sports history. It was my privilege to meet him a few times and to eat at his restaurant. He was my football hero as I was growing up and remains so today. It's nice to know that he was also a very nice person as well to both teammates, family and fans.

September 17, 2002

Dear Mrs. Unitas & Family:

I remember seeing John at 9 o'clock Mass almost every Sunday morning at St. John's Church, Longreen. So many times I wanted to approach him and talk to him for just a few minutes. Just to ask about his health and to thank him for the wonderful football excitement that he gave to sports fans across the country. And to thank him for being such a good person to his community.

However, I (like most of the parishoners) respected John's privacy. I decided instead to write John a letter expressing the above thoughts to him. I am now sorry that I did not act more quickly and do so while John was still with us. Only God knows what is in store for each of us.

My wife, Mary Ellen and I wish to express our sincerest condolences to all in the Unitas family and to thank you for sharing "Johnny U" with all of us.

I remember as a little girl when I attended Waverly Elementary this football player would walk his kids to school and would always say hello to us while we stood in line to go in as he went by. Growing up and working at Memorial Stadium the memories of Johnny were always around us....we will miss him dearly!

I was extremely blessed to have had the privilege of working alongside John on the radio over the past few years. It was never less than thrilling to be in his company. I hope everyone can grasp just how special he really was: a star of the greatest magnitude who chose to walk with the people.

I remember my dad going to the Colts games and watching them on tv. I grew up with Colts football and remember all the wonderful things that were said about Johnny and what he stood for. Number 19 will reign in everyone's hearts as one of the greatest people on earth. May God rest his soul.

Dear Sandy, Children and Family,

I just want to express my sincere sympathy to everyone of you. I am originally from Catonsville, Maryland and loved your dad and what he stood for. When I was 16 years old in 1957 I begged my dad to get me tickets to the Colt game to see Johnny U. He did and I will never forget it and others afterwards. Later in life my brother-in-law, Bill Elkins, spotted for the colts and I made it to the locker room after a game. Then I met your dad again at Sir Walter Raleigh's during a Telephone Company luncheon. He never changed, always so pleasant and easy to speak to. Not only was he the Greatest Quarterback, he was a "Great Person". May God Bless each and everyone of you.

Sincerely,

Dolores(Dolly)Dotson

Mrs. Unitas & family,

Mr. Unitas was truely a kind gentleman. Years ago as an 8 year old kid walking through the woods, I came upon a man chopping wood. I'd been walking a while & almost lost asked him where I'd come upon. I wasn't much into football & had no clue who I was speaking to. He brought me in the kitchen for a glass of water where I noticed trophies over the cupboards. He saw me looking... I apologized I'd not recognized him... He said a few nice words.. I asked if he could give me his autograph & he went off & brought back two pictures which he signed & addressed to me. He then pointed me back through the woods best to my home. I can still clearly recall most of it all & feel a great deal of warmth & kindess from this man chopping wood. Mr. Unitas is known as a truely kind & caring gentleman & that day he left a memory I'll never forget. My prayers & best wishes go out to his wife, kids & family.
