Johnny White Obituary

HICKORY - Johnny Darrell White Sr., 62, of 11th Avenue, NE, Hickory, died unexpectedly at his home Monday, Aug. 3, 2009. Mr. White had battled depression the past several years and his heavenly father decided to end his struggle and call him home. Born in Catawba County on March 1, 1947, to George and Nellie Robinson, he was later adopted by his uncle and aunt, the late Jim and Bethel White. In addition to his mother, Nell White of Hickory; a daughter, Tracy C. Laney of Hickory; a son, Johnny D. White Jr.; two sisters, Maryanne Setzer and Barbara Benfield of Hickory; five grandchildren, Ashley White, Jessica White, Cassianne Coffey, Jon White and Dakota Laney; and four great-grandsons survive him. A brother, Jimmy Robinson, preceded him in death. A Celebration of Johnny's life will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2009, at Jenkins Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Ernest Speagle will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Condolence messages may be sent to www.jenkinsfuneralhome.net. The White family has entrusted arrangements to Jenkins Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Newton.

A lot of people do not realize what a battle depression can be, I admire the family for writing Mr. White's obituary in the manner they did. I struggle with this same illness and it is a struggle. My prayers are with all of you.
