Jonathan Flom Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 10 to Jan. 14, 2023.
Jonathan Andrew Flom, M.D., 57, passed away unexpectedly on January 10, 2023 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, surrounded by his family.

Born October 21, 1965, in Fargo, North Dakota to parents Harold and Alida Flom, Jonathan was a survivor. He was an Eagle Scout and served in the 82nd Airborne division, completing Airborne training along with PsyOps training and was assigned to the Special Operations Command at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A graduate of Concordia College (Moorhead) and the University of North Dakota School of Medicine, Jonathan then practiced psychiatry at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he was known for his kind and gentle nature.

He is remembered for his rocking taste in music, keen sense of humor, and ability to make anyone feel welcome. Jonathan was an artist and actor as seen most recently on the stages of Cape Fear Regional Theatre and the Gilbert Theater. He also served as a Scout Leader for his son's Troop 740. Jonathan was a fierce advocate for mental health and addiction treatment. His work to remove the stigma society attaches to those seeking treatment for and battling mental illness and addiction was personal. Jonathan believed in the power of AA and mental health treatment. Remember to keep coming back...it works if you work it.

Loved and survived by children Jillian (Torrance, California), Laurel and Benjamin (Wilmington, North Carolina). He is also survived by his parents Harold and Alida Flom of Fargo, his brother Matthew (Nora) and nephew Jonathan of Blaine, MN. He is preceded in death by his nephew Erik Flom.

A visitation with the family and reception will be held at St. Pauls-in-the-Pines Episcopal Church, 1800 St. Paul Ave., Fayetteville, NC on Thursday January 12 from 5-7 P.M.

The funeral will be held Saturday January 14 at 2 P.M. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 120 21st Ave North, Fargo, ND.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Project HART based in Fargo, ND at www.projecthartnd.org.

I was stationed with Jon for AIT at Lowry AFB, CO in 1986 and then served with him in A Co, 8th PSYOP BN, 4th PSYOP Group, 1st Special Operations Command, Ft. Bragg, NC. Jon was a great friend and brother. A kind and gentle giant among men. My sincere condolences to his family. Slow respectful salute for my friend and brother .

Amy and I were reminiscing about the good times with the Flom boys growing up. John was such a kind friend. I remember watching his dad's military home movies (Jon was so proud) and going to the Okay candy store. I also remember having his favorite tater tot casserole at his birthday party. We just wanted his family to know how much we enjoyed him. Sending our sincere condolences.
