Just thought of Dr. J.H. and found out through internet about his passing. He was an amazing person and a very nice gentleman. I had been fortunate to interact with him and watch him share his incredible expertise. My sincere condolences to family and friends.

Jon willingly loaned me his car at college. We both were from Detroit, and he was one year ahead of me in college. His car barely worked, without windshield wipers--but I thought it was a god-send, and he enormously generous.
He was exceptionally
smart and often maddeningly irreverent.

And once when we argued about the meaning of the word "esoteric" and I showed him that the unabridged dictionary supported me, he said simply, "The dictionary is wrong!" That had never occurred to me.

I extend my sympathies to his family.

I trained with Jonathan at WPIC many years ago. He was not only an important mentor but also my friend and doctor. He was brilliant, unconventional, witty and irreverent. He will be missed. My sincerest condolences to all of you.

Dear Mrs. Himmelhoch, Leah, Rachel, Darah, and especially Naomi,
I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Himmelhoch's passing. I remember how kind and humorous (wacky!) he was and what a kind, generous, and loving family you all are. He would approve of the humor in his obituary.
You have my deepest sympathy on your loss.
Love,
Abigail

My condolences to Judith, all those daughters, and the entire Himmelhoch family. Jon inspired me during our few years together as Harvard undergraduates and roommates. That inspiration derived from his extraordinary intellect, his compassion for those who had not had the opportunities he had, his facility for languages, his interest in music, and his devotion to his studies. I remain indebted to Jon and saddened by his passing.

I first met John when Darah invited me over for thanksgiving. Darah's mum Judy and dad John showed me such kindness and warmth that they made me feel part of the family. John was such a interesting unique character and I will forever remember him with great affection. My love to all the family.

I was a resident physician in the Mood Disorders Clinic when Dr. Himmelhoch was the Director. He had a special respect and compassion for his patients given only to those who have experienced suffering. He was a brilliant teacher, gifted clinician and researcher and most of all, a very kind man. My condolences to his family.

We nurses at Western Psychiatric and Clinic LOVED and enjoyed Jonathan Himmelhoch. He was funny, dramatic, and brilliant. There was a special bond between him and us nurses. He stood up for us and we stood up for him. I can't think of too many other physicians that we would necessarily have said that about. Those were wonderful years and he was a memorable part of them.
