Jonathan Todd Weber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 19, 2024.
Jonathan Todd Weber, MD, FACP, FIDSA (CAPT, USPHS, RET), died unexpectedly at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA, on Wednesday, November 13th, during surgery to repair a broken clavicle sustained in a bicycle accident on October 29th. He was 66.

Todd dedicated 32 years to the U.S. Public Health Service and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), retiring in 2021. His distinguished career included roles in the Epidemic Intelligence Service, the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention, and as Director of the Office of Antimicrobial Resistance. From 2007 to 2011, Todd also served as a U.S. government liaison to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control in Stockholm. Among his many accolades were the CDC's Excellence in Leadership Award, and recognition as a finalist for the 2013 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medal, meeting President Obama at a White House ceremony.

Growing up in Brooklyn Heights, New York, Todd attended the progressive and prestigious Saint Ann's School (Class of '76) starting in second grade, the first year the newly-formed school opened its doors. Todd shared a close bond with his sister, Suzanne Weber, and his parents, the late Idelle Weber, an artist whose works are in major museums across the country, and the late Julian L. Weber, lawyer and President of National Lampoon (1979 to 1984).

Always curious and interested in learning, Todd was committed to helping people in need. So much so that, even though he spent his years at Princeton University (BA '80) as a journalism major, he decided during his senior year to instead pursue a career in public health.

As Todd explained: "I was interested in becoming a reporter during college, and took an internship with Jack Anderson, an investigative journalist. I was given a tip about a group of women in Alsea, Oregon who appeared to be having miscarriages after exposure to dioxin-contaminated herbicide periodically sprayed around their homes. These women all had a single grade-school teacher in common whom they trusted and to whom they confided these events. She kept what was for all intents and purposes an epidemiological line listing. After hearing her story about these women's experiences and writing up the article that Jack published in newspapers all over the country, I knew public health was the only thing I wanted to do."

After graduating from Princeton, Todd obtained the necessary credits for medical school at a pre-med program at Columbia University and went on to get his medical degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University (MD '87). Following an internal medicine residency at Bellevue Hospital Center and Tisch Hospital in New York City during the early peak of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Todd joined the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS).

Todd changed jobs within DHQP in 2017, becoming the Associate Director for Epidemiological Science, responsible for reviewing the division's scientific publications and serving on two of CDC's Institutional Review Boards. He was very active in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic serving as an Associate Director for Science on multiple teams.

After retirement, Todd remained committed to public health, teaching a bioethics course at Columbia University in spring 2024.

Todd is survived by his children, Bianca Maria and his son, Carlo. He is also survived by his sister Suzanne Weber, brother-in-law Chris Duva, niece Julia Duva, as well as his extended family, many friends and numerous colleagues. Todd's legacy of service and dedication to improving global health will endure in the lives he touched and the work he inspired.

Just learned today at the 2025 EIS conference of this tragedy. Todd was a shining light in his time in our Enteric Diseases Branch, and continued to lead by example and good humor throughout his career at CDC. My deepest condolences to Todd's family. Rob Tauxe.

Having read about Dr. Weber and his remarkable accomplishments in a column in the Washington Post by his friend Marc Fisher, I was moved to read further about this good man and his tireless dedication to keeping his fellow citizens well. His service to our country was extremely laudable, and I was impressed and touched by Dr. Weber's good work, as well as his wisdom.
Condolences to his family and lots ved ones.

I'm so sorry to hear about Todd's passing. I just learned of it from the Post's article today. My first wife and I met Todd and Elisabetta in child birth class and then had our first borns around the same time. We kept seeing each other until my first wife and moved away after we separated. I remember Todd as warm, loving, and fun. My heart goes out to Elisabetta, Bianca, and Carlo.

I hadn't seen Todd in years, but am still saddened to hear of his passing. We never know what's around the corner for us. I remember I had a dinner party more than 25 years ago in Atlanta and Todd wowed all of us with his Red Wine Poached Pears! What a delight he was! My condolences to his family and friends.

I'm sorry to hear about Todd's passing, such a simple surgery, but we never know what life holds for us. I was Staff Specialist in the Epidemiology Program Office. My duties were personnel related to bring the EIS Class 1990 on board with the Public Health Service. I thought Todd was the one riding the camel on the National Geographic issue. I look back and have fond memories of Todd, and all the years of EIS classmates. Gone too soon!

During the EIS matching process, we reviewed Todd's letters of recommendation from Bellevue and designated him him a "wow" (walks on water). After he joined our group for EIS training, we enjoyed his keen intellect, ready wit, and good companionship. How sad that he has left us.

I too was an EIS classmate of Todd's and echo the comments of the others that he was a great guy. His understated humor, keen intelligence, and perpetual kindness were one of a kind. I hope his family can temper the shock of his sudden death with the knowledge that he was loved by his peers and contributed much to CDC's public health mission over the decades.

I am so saddened by this sudden, unexpected tragic news. Todd was the reason I joined EIS and eventually worked full time at. He came to Jamaica as an EISO to assist us with an investigation of a typhoid fever outbreak in Westmoreland. I was the Medical Officer of Health in St. James assisting the MOH for the parish and one of my roles was Todd's liaison. We quickly developed a friendship. I got an opportunity to go to Columbia University and while there he told me about the EIS program. I applied and he opened up his apartment to me to stay at when I came to Atlanta for the interview. The rest as they say is history. We kept in touch during my time as EISO and while he was in Europe, and when he returned and got married, we visited each occasionally, had lunch together frequently. We promised to keep in touch after he retired, and unfortunately, we did not keep that promise. Sincerest condolences to his family, Todd was a great human being.

Saddened by the loss. Todd was my EIS classmate. We most recently ran into each other when we were each stranded at a NYC airport because of the weather. I had the opportunity to learn about his beloved family and personal interests in a way I hadn´t before. He was a conscientious human being and an accomplished epidemiologist. My condolences to his family.

I am so saddened by this tragic news. J Todd was my EIS classmate. Following EIS, I was always pleased to run into J Todd at CDC, around Atlanta, or at one of our many EIS Class of 1990 reunions. He was such a bright and kind person. My deepest condolences to his family.

I am shocked and saddened by this loss. Todd was such an intelligent, thoughtful, and kind colleague -- and of course with this uncanny, dry sense of humor. My condolences to his family and all of us who have been so fortunate to have had Todd in our lives.

I'm very sad to hear about Todd's unexpected passing. He was a great public health leader and a kind, thoughtful person. While at ECDC, he invited me to give a lecture and was a wonderful host during my time in Stockholm. My condolences to his family.

Todd was an awesome epidemiologist and mentor. We spent a lot of time swapping stories of working at ECDC, an institution we both loved. My condolences to his children whom I know he loved so very much.

I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Weber very briefly. The interactions with him were always enlightening. The last time I met him was during a conference and he recognized me right away and remembered all our past interactions. He was a great mentor and a kind soul.

I was so saddened to find out today about Todd's unexpected passing in the CDC memorials. I knew Todd through the Princeton alumni network in Atlanta and spoke to him several times. Last time I saw him was about two years ago and he'd just left CDC. He was always kind and affable. I send my respect and heartfelt condolences to his children and loved ones.
