Jose Andujar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 31, 2024.
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jose Andujar, affectionately known as GI Joe, on May 30, 2024, at the age of 72. At the age of 18, Joe was drafted into the Vietnam War, serving from 1970 to 1971. Joe continued to serve honorably in the National Guard and later participated in Operation Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991. GI Joe also served in the Operation OIF Iraqi Freedom between 2004 and 2005. Joe remained dedicated to his service in the National Guard until his medical retirement in 2012, after over 42 years of military service.

Jose Luis Andujar was born on April 20, 1952, in East Chicago, Indiana, to Juanita Batista and Armando Andujar. Joe spent his free time volunteering in the neighborhood, at the Boys and Girls Club, doing yard work, and spending time with family. A devoted husband, father, and soldier, Jose's legacy of bravery, love, and commitment will be cherished forever.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents, Juanita Batista and Armando Andujar; his sister, Angela Marie Andujar; and his niece, Daisy Andujar. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Bertha Andujar; his brother, Alberto Andujar, and wife Milna (Minnie) Andujar; his children, Monica Nelluvelil, Maria (Lupe) Flores, and Gerardo Flores and wife Jessica Lopez; his grandchild, Joslyn Pollard; and his niece, Monica Rivera, and her sons, Michael and Brandon Rivera.

Services will be held on June 4th, 2024 at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville, IN 46410 between 3-7pm.

Tío Jose was the best and coolest uncle who I have ever met! I always loved when he´d come to swing by at my house to have to time to spend together with him telling me stories about what he did in the military or any on-going news. He also thought me what it means to become a great man with good intentions and that nothing should hold you down when it comes to dreams. Tio will always remain in my heart for the rest of my life.

I worked with SSG (ret) Jose Andujar at the Drug Demand Reduction Program, as part of Counterdrug in the Indiana Army National Guard. He was a great Soldier, fun to work with and dedicated to keeping kids off of drugs.
Rest in Peace, Jose!
My sincere condolences to his beloved family!

I have so many great memories of Joe that I will treasure. He will take me to the park, beach and neighborhood to ride our bicycles. Was fun spending time with him. One time I went to my titi Margarita's house and I left my bike outside her neighbors house for 5 mins and someone stole my bike. I was so upset and I called him crying and within few days he came with another purple bike. He sure put a smile in my face. He was very thoughtful & caring. And one of many memories I loved when he will take me to the military tanks to through candy at the Puerto Rican Parades. Best memories of my childhood was because of him. My forever 2nd dad. The best step dad a kid can ask for. G.I Joe was the best person, kind, caring, helpful, thoughtful, an awesome human being. Never thought this day will come he was a Super man in my eyes. God sure created the best man in earth and now he has called his soldier home. Rest in Paradise you definitely earn those wing GI Joe... you will be missed and forever in our hearts.

My thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences to his wife and kids.

Joe Andujar as I always knew him as was one of my class mates from Elementary School to High School. One of my best friends until I was 17 in 1969 that I left to the USNavy and we lost track of each other. But now I will continue to lift his family up in my prayers. Grateful d bless you family.
