When I knew Jose on the gritty, Lower East Side of new York, he spoke very fondly of his immigrant family and his childhood in Colusa, playing along the banks of the Sacramento River. To a kid from Brooklyn, it sounded sunny, carefree, idyllic. No wonder he was a optimist, so competent, so creative and community-minded. Whenever I drive I-5, north of Sacramento and pass the Williams/Colusa exit, I remember Jose, the gifts he gave and the joy he shared. I did so last week and he was with me, as always.

I met Jose, when he came to my hometown, NYC, to check out the Catholic Worker. He was joyful, creative, competent, warm and quickly made many friends. In his short time there. we had many adventures, testing out our nearly adult wings. We shared many thoughts, dreams and hopes; we lived together, we travelled, we made 'Good Trouble' sometimes. Though we lost touch eventually, I often looked for him, via mutual friends and later, the internet. Over the years, Jose's name always came up at reunions of former CW members, war resistors and old friends. We all missed him very much. It doesn't surprise us now, that he went on helping, organizing and always spreading warmth throughout his life.
What a sad day, when I learned of his passing.
His memory and example live on in places far afield.

Jose was a true friend! Jose or better yet his soon to be bride wanted to be married in the back yard of thier house. Jose and I built a gazebo, not a kit , so they could get married.A true measure of his love for her!! May he Rest In Peace.

Melba, we just heard about Jose's death. We are shocked and heart broken. I haven't seen you since we ran into you in England many years ago but I know Tony had dinner with Jose a few years back. Please know you and your children and grandchildren are in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Fondly, Martha and Tony Enriquez, Tucson, AZ

Mr. Arce took a chance in hiring me as a summer intern at Citi and I will always be forever grateful. He was truly a great manager and mentor, and I've learned a great deal about finance and excel modeling from him. Jose was patient, empathetic and dedicated to helping his local community. Thank you, Jose for everything. You will be missed.
