At night while we sleep ....a soft caress and a quiet voice would say "I love you Darlene Baserva, you are the love of my life." are the words he would whisper in my ear. Jose will be with me forever. And I will miss him dearly..There was I side of Jose that only my eyes did see. Jose you can be free now I pray that you watch over me

Rest in peace, Bro. One of my fondest memories was working with Jose at the Pizza Loft in Miami before the fire in 1996. I thought the world of him as did everybody else. Have a cervesa on us. Dave Dunning

Jose was a kind, hard working man who worked hard for everything he had. He was a "fly-by-the-seat of your pants" kind of guy who seemed would never settle down. Until he met his wife Darlene, who completed him and tamed him as much as Jose could be tamed.
Despite Jose's rugged facade, his heart had a tender part he kept reserved for those he cared about and those in need. He believed in helping those who suffered from addictions or simply had been dealt a tough deck of cards, sometimes to his detriment. But it didn't stop him from helping the next person.
So many times his nephew wanted to treat friends and coworkers to his uncle's delicious Cuban Sandwiches...and Jose graciously fed them on the house, always saying, "just tip my staff, that's all I want, that you tip my staff." I remember that so vividly. Then there were those who were suffering, like my dear friend Tammy ONeal who amidst her chemo treatments craved Jose's and Jose generously donated a feast for her and her family. Then there was the Battle family who lost their son, just to name a few, who amidst their tragedy were greeted with Jose's Cuban food to give them a reprieve and provide them with a modicum of solace.
He was a funny man, and hid his heart well, but never when need, compassion and charity dictated.
May he rest in peace.
