Our dad had a way of teaching us important lessons. One that comes to mind is a time when him and I were speaking near the peach tree he had recently planted. The flimsy sapling bent over, leaning close to the ground. He made a point to show me how the stakes he placed around the small tree kept it in place; helping it grow in the right direction. Of course he wanted me to know that I was that sapling and he was the stake. And as stern as he was at times, I understood his tough love was for a good reason. I appreciated him being there to guide me in the right direction.

The most important lesson he ever taught us was how to face heavy challenges. He didn't just talk about examples of how to face adversity. We saw him overcome many obstacles, all while staying calm and collected. He held us to a high standard, as he did with himself.

We witnessed him face absolute uncertainty when he left the strawberry fields in search of a better living as a laborer in construction. We saw his hunger to learn; to be the best in his field. From hunting small game and selling it to make a living in Mexico to becoming a California Certified Calstone Master Builder, he overcame tough challenges with grace. We learned from his actions.

Most kids came back to school with stories of their summer vacation. My brother and I picked strawberries at our dad's farm during the summer. Not by choice. My back would hurt so bad that I'd lie down between the strawberry rows and take a break any chance I could.

The most crates I ever picked in a day were 40. Dad's daily max was 120. When mom was 8 months pregnant with me, she would pick 100 crates a day. They did this not because they wanted to, but because they had to. He made sure I certainly knew what kind of job lay ahead of me if I decided to lean too far in the wrong direction. He was just guiding me.

He left us a gift. The fire inside of us that pushes us to be the best. I've had to dig deep as I've faced several challenges in my life. I found myself walking through mine fields in foreign countries. Absolute uncertainty. Heart racing, but calm and collected. I didn't just wake up one day and feel like the impossible was close to attainable. This he instilled in us.

He was given 4 months to live. He went on to live 11 more. He's left some big shoes to fill. But we are up to the task.
