I worked with Joe in the early 70s at Sosart. Not a sweeter soul ever walked the earth, and his talent was as great as his love of his friends and freedom. A really pure spirit.

I met Jose in San Antonio when he was helping Pleas McNeal design graphics for the Eagle Bone Whistle tabloid and creating a logo for the city's first community radio project. Later knew Jose in Austin as part of the concert poster art scene. His poster for Savoy Brown is in the Austin art book "Homegrown". Not just a fine artist but a wonderful guy always ready to give a big smile.

From our family, I wish you peace in your time of loss. No words can make this any easier to deal with, just know that my family holds your family gently in our hearts, especially now.

The world has lost a kind and very talented person. I was saddened to hear of the passing of another of our shrinking generation. I hadn't spoken to Jose in a couple of years, and hadn't seen him since 97 when I visited him and Leah in Texas. I was amazed that my old friend had grown up, I certainly had not. Jose had certainly changed from when he, John and I went to Mexico City to visit family in 1981? What a wild time we had on that trip Laredo to Mexico City on the train. Jose's artful eye gave such insight into the world. He will be greatly missed. My best to Leah and the family.

My condolences to my wonderful aunt Leah and my cousins Jose and Catherine. We all lost a great man, an uncle, a father, a husband and friend. You will be missed. I remember when my uncle Jose lived in Berwyn, IL a few blocks away from me. We watched the bulls games together, that's the 90s bulls with Jordan, we had so much fun. He taught me how to skate which turned into me playing hockey for many years, a memory I will always have. I love you aunt Leah and hope to see you soon.

I've lost a very good friend. We knew each other for 38 years; a lot of memories there. Through him, I met my wife, Joan, and he met Leah through Joan. I will miss him. We had a lot of great times together. A part of me has died with him.

Our condolences to Leah, José and Catherine regarding José's death. Even though it's been almost 4 years since we visited, the memories are dear. Our correspondence by phone and email since then revealed that he put up a valiant fight.
I enjoyed working with him those years in Chicago and enjoyed his sunny disposition. We had a lot of fun between shift changes. He was a talented artist, musician and I loved his wit.
He made the right decision to move down Texas way to raise his family and I hope your fond memories and love will overcome your sorrow.
God's blessings on your wonderful family.

I am so grateful to have known Jose for so many years. I would like to think that some of his goodness rubbed off on me. People like Jose only come once in a life time, I am glad it was mine.

Jose was a hero to me and one of the bravest men I have ever known. He worked with me at Color By Numbers where his artistic skill and talent helped us create amazing work. On the bad days when I knew he felt awful, especially after every chemotherapy or experimental treatment, he still came to work, always with a smile on his face. If asked how he was he always said, "fine' or "good." My wife is a cancer survivor and I have seen how bad she would feel and honestly could not believe Jose could keep coming in. But he did. He was a warrior.
Jose loved his family so much and you couldn't be around him without knowing this. He also believed in Christ Jesus and was strong in his faith. The world will miss Jose but I know he is with our Savior. I will always remember and be grateful for the lessons I learned from about strength and trusting God.
