Jose Contreras Obituary
Dr. Jose de Jesus Contreras, a devoted family man, esteemed physician, and cherished educator, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2024 in Orangeburg, NY, surrounded by his loving children. Born on December 25, 1936 in Santiago, Dominican Republic, to Jose Antonio Contreras and Maria Leocadis Rodriguez, Jose made his mark as a renowned urologist before retiring from a distinguished practice in New York City's Washington Heights.
Jose, affectionately called Chepito, was a proud Army Veteran and decorated Vietnam War hero, embodying the American Dream through his unwavering commitment to family, country, and community. As a devoted Dominican American, he was not only a dedicated physician and educator but also a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. Known for his genuine kindness and infectious love of life, Jose had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel valued and at ease. His dedication to his patients and students, combined with his warm, inspiring presence, left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Jose will be remembered for his warm smile, strong work ethic, and his passion for music, dancing, and hosting gatherings in his beautiful garden. His legacy is reflected in the lives he touched and the hearts he warmed with his presence.
Predeceased by his beloved wife Mary, Jose is survived by his children son Jose Orlando Contreras; daughter-in-law Evelyn; grandchildren Estefania (Jesemanuel), Sofia & Alexa of San Juan Puerto Rico; daughter Cristelle Solange McNeill; son-in-law Charles; grandchildren Josue, Deborah & Hannah of Bridgeport, CT; daughter Maria Contreras of Piermont, NY; and daughter Michelle McNerney; son-in-law Dennis; grandchildren Sebastian and Scarlett of Orangeburg, NY and many nephews and nieces.
His legacy lives on through his family, students, patients, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The impact he made on countless lives will forever be remembered and cherished.
Relative and friends are invited to attend service at:
St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 895 Piermont Avenue, Piermont, NY
Funeral Mass: Saturday, August 31 at 10am.

Jose was the most kind and gentile man I ever had the please of knowing. I worked with him for years at Cabrini Medica center. A devoted Dr. He thought nothing of picking his patient up and driving them to the hospital for their procedures and then driving them home. He will be truly missed.
