I worked for Joe as a freelance writer when he was editor of Northwest Magazine. He'd assign me stories and I'd suggest ideas to him as well. I was pleased whenever he selected my articles to be the cover stories. I enjoyed Joe's humor and feistiness. At times he reminded me of a character out of Damon Runyon. His friends Sadie and Al Feves, I learned years later, were close friends of my parents. What a rich, full life he had. What achievements!

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. He was a wonderful sweet character and I'm so glad I knew him. I worked with him for 10 years doing special projects at the Oregonian, he introduced me to my husband, and he was a good neighbor. He touched many lives.

We, at Catholic Charities, were saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Bianco, but are honored that you have chosen Catholic Charities as a benefactor in his memory.
Your father was a faithful friend of Catholic Charities. May perpetual light shine upon him, and may God bless your family during this difficult time.

What a wonderful tribute to an amazing man. Though I am a former Oregonian journalist, I never worked with your father. But I sure wish I had! Peace and comfort to you all.

I first met Joe in 1992 at Holy Rosary in Portland. Joe was at The Oregonian, and I worked for The Columbian. We chatted about newspapers, of course. He also was organizing an art exhibition of Seattle-area artist James Martin's work at Mount Angel Abbey and invited us to visit. We did. We fell for Martin's work and bought a painting. Also, one of my sons gave me "My Dear Italian Mother's Peasant Recipes" one year for my birthday, long before I met Joe.
